This is one of only three restaurants in New Orleans where I will eat the raw fish. I have never had fish here that wasn't absolutely fresh. In addition, Horinoya has many traditional dishes that you don't see at too many Japanese restaurants in this area. It's tempting to eat the lunch or dinner specials (teriyaki, tempura, etc.) because they are the cheapest deals on the menu, but to really get a great meal here, venture into the other sections of the menu. The agedashi tofu (fried tofu), the kitsune soba (noodles with dried bean curd), and saba shioyaki (grilled mackerel) are all excellent. The atmosphere is very soothing and the decor is tasteful. The service is almost always efficient, though not always friendly.

We sat at the sushi bar and was impressed by the freshness and variety of the seafood. I was surprised to find this caliber of a sushi bar in New Orleans. They have daily specials & the best days to go are Tuesdays & Fridays, shipment day! The wasabi was real wasabi & very fresh. Those who have had the real thing will understand. Highly recommended if you are a sushi snob like me! If you are looking for a rock & roll sushi roll joint where everything is chili pepper hot to mask the poor quality, don't go here. A very traditional Japanese restaurant that prides itself on quality.

To those Americans who are squeemish of seaweed, or looking for good old American deep-fried jumbo rolls or other fake-o Japanese food, sorry, this is not the place for you. What Horinoya brings to the table is an authentic sampling of some of the most beloved dishes eaten commonly in Japan. This is not just a sushi place. If you want some real Japanese food, this is the only place in the city to eat. Having lived in Japan, I consider it number one. The prices are steep, but the food and service is well worth it. They even have special traditional style rooms in the back! Be forewarned though, it's difficult to find parking without a meter. Also, wide wheelchairs may not fit through the tiny front door (my friend's normal width one barely made it).

Wow what a place. We were greated with a friendly face and were seated in this great atmosphere. The whole staff will take care of you they even give you a nice hot towel when you are seated. I was suprised when i had more than one server. They were allways looking and made sure we got everything we needed. By far the best sushi iv had in a while. Also the mochi ice cream balls were awesome. If you have a chance to check the little gem out i suggest you do. What a place!
