“Terriffic Fried Chicken”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

Dooky Chase is a place not to miss when in New Orleans. The meal we had (fried chicken) was excellent. Omar provided great service. Leah Chase was in the kitchen overseeing everything and took time to have a lively conversation with our group.

“True New Orleans; a Paragon of Excellence”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Best gumbo in the city. The mac and cheese is great, as is the fried chicken. I went here for the first time in 1986, and have been back several times. It hasn't changed, and even after surviving Katrina it's as good as it ever was. Don't miss it for lunch. It's off the beaten path.

“A New Orleans Gem”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

Visiting New Orleans and not going to Dooky's is like going to India and not seeing the Taj Majal. I visit NOLAN twice a year and never miss going to Miss Leah Chase's great restaurant. I always love her buffet and especially her fried chicken! A gastronomical treat enjoyed by many presidents and actors. Beautiful artwork adorn the walls and if you are lucky, Leah will come out of the kitchen and visit with you at your table. Her cookbooks are great and she just appeared a couple of weeks ago as a guest on "Top Chef". Great food and atmosphere. You won't be disappointed.

“Creole food in an elegant setting”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

DookyChase has a historic pedigree. Various presidents have dined here including Obama. Leah Chase works magic with creole dishes, elevating them to a pure culinary treat. I had the fried chicken which was crisp, juicy, and not greasy. My friend had a shrimp dish which was delicious. Best part was meeting Miss Leah in the kitchen where she was monitoring the cook staff. She has wonderful stories about her experiences and I hope she'll put them in a book. Interesting art in the restaurant, too; I noted some by Elizabeth Catlett.

“Soul Food Delight”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

Went here at the suggestion of a friend and fellow TripAdviser member and what a great suggestion! It's one of those places where you are met at the front door and instantly feel like you are at home. It's in an old, poor part of town where the restaurant stands out as being out of place, but in reality that's exactly the right place. That is where it started and as a lot of civil rights meetings were held above the restaurant, when the owners considered moving to expand, they made the decision to stay where their roots were and support the community they had called home.

Lunch is served buffet style or you can order off of the menu. We had the buffet and sampled a little of just about everything. It was all great! The selections were served in small dishes so they were hot and fresh and gave me the feeling of serving myself at a family potluck at Grandma's.

The service was just as notable as the food. After seeing the display of congratulations of the owner's (Leah Chase) 90th birthday from the Pope and the President and Michele Obama, we knew there had to be a 'story', so we asked our waitress to tell it to us. She asked the Manager to come tell us the whole fascinating story and she in turn asked if we would like to meet Ms Chase and of course we did. We were led to the kitchen and there sitting in the middle of the Kitchen we found the 90 year old owner and chef sitting in her wheelchair, but clearly in charge. And what a delightful, vibrant lady we found and heard even more of the story.

This was one of those places that even if the food wasn't great, the good karma of the people owning and working there would make it worth coming back to. I'll be back! ... maybe tomorrow!
