Description: Established in 1948, The Award Winning Gumbo Shop features a wide range of New Orleans cuisine at its finest. Enjoy fantastic customer service and great food. Patrons are also welcome to order from our full wine list including 30 Wines by the Glass.Gumbo Shop is located at 630 St. Peters Street, 1/2 block from Jackson Square in the French Quarter. As the name implies, gumbo is a fixture on the menu, but our menu also features Creole and Cajun inspired dishes that represent New Orleans' truly unique cuisine. Gumbo Shop was founded in 1948 in a former French Quarter home built in the late 1700's. The building represents a typical French Quarter layout with central courtyard and former kitchen in the rear. For the past 20 consecutive years, Gumbo Shop has received the "Best of New Orleans" best place to eat gumbo from Gambit, a local publication that relies on reader polls to determine the winners in all categories.

My husband and I had lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. After waiting in line a few minutes we were seated in the courtyard at a shaded table. It was a very enjoyable atmosphere and our waitress was attentive. I had a wonderful, refreshing cocktail (it was in the 90's) with cilantro infused vodka. I think it was called a cucumber breeze. I loved it and didn't finish it so I could get a go cup and walk around with it. We ordered both the jambalaya and the chicken andouille sausage gumbo. We aren't big gumbo eaters but wanted to try it while there. It was tasty, not too spicy and complemented the jambalaya nicely. This restaurant had been recommended by two different tour guides who also recommended a bunch of places so I know they weren't both on the take!!

What a lovely interion in which to dine, spacious & with murals of Mardi Gras & the French Market on the walls.

The Chicken Andouille Gumbo included boneless chicken, Andouille ( a Cajun sausage) & seasonings all simmered in chicken stock & served with rice. This was the most tasty Gumbo I have had.

Service was efficient & friendly.
I'd come back here & recommend it.

I had read all the positive reviews on the Gumbo Shop so off we headed to try some of the delicious dishes on offer. In my group we tried the jambalaya, combination platter, chicken gumbo and the red beans and sausage. Three of us were un-impressed. Southern cooking is all we have been eating since arriving at Louisianna, so we have been hitting one ofter another and trying all the different gumbo's etc. It was not that the food was bad, it just did not live up to the reviews I had been reading. There was a long line to get into dinner as we were leaving and I felt like saying, there is a better one a few blocks away.
In short, the dishes lacked the spicy taste we have come to expect with this style of cooking and was more expensive than other gumbo eateries.

We're sorry that our dishes weren't spicy enough for your taste, Brigitte. We try to maintain a medium spice level to better suit all of our guests, but we completely understand that some folks really like to turn up the heat. We can definitely do that, and we wish that we had been able to bring you some new plates—don't hesitate to ask! That said, we know that we have what it takes to wow you, and we hope you'll give us another chance next time you're in NOLA.

Tasty food and good value right in the middle of the French Quarter. The place is attractive and the food and service were excellent considering it was a busy Saturday with the Cajun Zydeco Festival as well as the Creole Tomato Festival going on.
