“Southern Food Served with Attitude!”
Reviewed March 9, 2014

Hop on the St Charles streetcar and ride all the way out to Carrollton to the Camellia Grill. The streetcar stops right out front of this mini southern plantation look alike.

When we arrived midmorning there was a short line and we waited for about 15 minutes before getting inside the door where you are directed to one of the booth-style seats around the outer edge of "the eating counter" for another short wait. We were then "called" to our spots at the stools and counter by our white jacketed waiter Leon. All the waiters and cooks are black gentlemen adorned in white waiter jackets, giving the diner a sense of southern genteel and hospitality.

The entire place only seats about 25-30 people all around a continuous dining counter in the shape of 2 U's. The cooking area is along the back wall and all open so you watch the chefs at work.

Each person has a separate ticket onto which the order is marked and then the fun begins. During our visit, there were about 6 other people seated at the same time. Once all the drinks were doled out and the orders taken, Leon started into a menagerie of undistinguishable southern lingo, calling the orders at once, out to Joe the grill chef. It was great and we didn't understand a word he was saying, but soon Joe had the food churning out a plate at a time and in no certain order whatsoever. All the time Leon continued with a continuous line of blarney and humorous anecdotes to the customers, other waiters and chefs alike. It was great fun joining in on the litany of antics!

I noticed a painting on the wall of a familiar chef in a checked tam hat with checkered pants. This was our chef Joe, much younger, and for 26 years employed there at the Camellia Grill, still wearing the same outfit! Our waiter Leon had been there 10 years.

I had the pancakes and bacon and hubby ordered the chili omelet. We split a piece of pecan pie that was heated on the grill after being brushed with butter...Yummy! I must say, that the other food was only mediocre, but the prices were cheap and the experience priceless!

“Yummy southern food”
Reviewed March 8, 2014

The hospitality people at the airport recommended this diner for lunch when we arrived in NOLA. We got a cab and went directly there - it was probably 10:30-11 am. We barely had to wait, but by the time we were done there were quite a few people waiting outdoors.

The restaurant is in what looks like an old white house, but indoors it is all diner style. Every seat is fixed at the counter, there are no tables that I could see. It is crowded and the hostess wasn't overly friendly but our waiter was attentive and nice. And the menu was great - I enjoyed all of the "southern" type food offered. (I'm from the north, we don't eat a lot of red beans and rice.) My meal of red beans and rice, a burger patty, and some grits was delicious and served quickly.

I'm not sure I'd go back again, only because there are SO many other places to eat in New Orleans. Plus, it's not in a very convenient location if you are a tourist and mostly in the French Quarter. But it was delicious and I'd recommend it to anyone!

“Good food”
Reviewed February 18, 2014 via mobile

I'm so glad we came! The food was good, not great, but the experience was worth it. The atmosphere was great and the servers are a key reason. If you're in the city, make sure to take the Streetcar for $1.25 to the Garden District. It's part of the experience and you'll get to see more if the city.

“Average burgers but great diner experiece”
Reviewed February 12, 2014

Camellia Grill is known for their burgers and while they are pretty good, I wouldn't say that they are anything special. It is rather inexpensive and they have a great breakfast however. The lineup could be long though, especially on the weekends. It is a unique diner experience though.

“neat experience, food just ok”
Reviewed February 11, 2014

The experience was pretty neat. The servers barking out orders and such. The atmosphere is cool. But the breakfast food is just ok, certainly nothing special
