Stayed here a while ago,all I'll say is I've travelled a lot and this place I only rate highly because the set up and the social aspect of the hostel, it's hard to ignore each other which is good, rooms were average,Asian girl at desk had major attitude problem but the people u meet in garden were so cool, area is dodgy but something makes me recommend this place

Just finished up spring break here with 3 other friends. We stayed in one of the private rooms. We loved our time at India House. We met so many amazing people. I would highly recommend this to a young traveler who is open to meeting new people!

I've just returned from a 5 day trip to the hostel and to be honest, I had been expecting worse after reading the reviews!
I didn't see a single cockroach, my room (private that I shared with a friend) and bathrooms were clean and tidy, bedding was clean if minimal. Room was cold but had a little oil radiator in and they supplied an extra blanket happily when I asked.
A very social place so can be a little noisy until the early hours, but just people chatting, no wild parties. I didn't eat there at all so can't comment on that but good kitchen facilities.
Good location, easy access by streetcar/taxi to city centre.
Staff seemed friendly and willing to help, I would stay here again, can't ask for much more for $20 a night!

Do not be fooled by the facade. This was by far the worst hostel experience I ever had, and I've stayed at many of them. The back girl at the desk was really rude and obnoxious. They have these offensive signs behind the desk area, saying how much they love hunting and killing animals. The place is extremely dirty, and in disrepair. Half the faucets are leaking, there are holes and cracks everywhere. They have these disgusting run down shacks they put you in. The bunk beds were very flimsy and noisy, and the mattresses had to be circa 1980's, stains on the sheets and the pillows were even worse. There were ROACHES all over... you have been warned. I was there in February, the nights get pretty cold... There was NO heat whatsoever in our dorm, I didn't get more than 3 hours of sleep because it was so cold and the pillow, mattress and blanket where really uncomfortable. If you're homeless, you might not mind India house as much.

India House is the place to be in New Orleans if you're looking for more than just a bed to sleep. They have this insane back yard, with plenty of space to socialize. They also got a pool, but unfortunately it was pretty cold when I was there, so...

Rooms are good sized and not cramped, internet is fast, and you can buy breakfast or dinner from them, made on a grill... Great stuff.

Top location, half block from the streetcar stop that will take you to the French Quarter!

Unfortunately I made the mistake of booking Bourbon House for Mardi Gras time and had to leave. It all went downhill for me after that. So, If you're indecisive between here and Bourbon House, don't even think twice, you're gonna have a much better time here, if you're a young social backpacker!

Room Tip: Ask for a room inside if you plan to sleep early, cause the backyard is quite busy!

Great place, decoration is fun, staff is really nice, pool looks great. I would definitely recommend it in summer. I went there in February, it was still great but rooms get cold at night.
Oh and it is 2 minutes away from a Canal street streetcar stop (Lopez street) which gets you to Bourbon street in 10-15 minutes max.

A very good place for backpackers - $20 per night and for breakfast $4-6 and there is dinner as well. The hostel is 2min from the streetcar (Canal St.) away. Downtown is 10-12 min by streetcar ($3 day-pass). I spent three nights in this hostel and I met almost 15 new friends - nice meeting-area, pool and free cafe! You shouln'd be to picky - it's a hostel in a Southern State!!!
You'll spent most of the time outside and it's a really good stay for the money!
