We exchanged some RCI points to stay at the Quarter House located in the French Quarter, a perfect place to begin seeing a lot of New Orleans sights. The building is really several that have been merged together into a very large location. Each unit is unique in size and configuration. We had a one bedroom unit on the 4th floor. Our bedroom was in an interior location so we slept wonderfully – absolutely no late night noise at all. The unit was tastefully decorated and had a touch of what I felt was old New Orleans, high wainscoting, rich wall colors or exposed bricks and a fancy chandelier light in the main room. The full kitchen was nice, but without a car, we didn’t really have the opportunity to make use of it as we didn’t shop for groceries nor did we see a store nearby. We didn’t really look either as there are a lot of great places to eat in New Orleans! Without kids, it wasn’t a priority.
The front desk staff was wonderful at recommending specific tour companies, directions, places to see and restaurant options. Every choice was a good value. They had several things going on during our stay, Sunday brunch, Monday food tasting and Tuesday wine and cheese afternoon, but we were too busy elsewhere to participate. I suggest anyone who does not know the city to make use of their concierge services.
We did not feel constricted at all without a car, although we did not want to explore the nearly countryside as there is plenty to see right in New Orleans itself. We walked around the immediate area or took one of 3 streetcar lines that are all a short walk from the Quarter House and cost $1.25 a ride or $3.00 per day. Several tours had pickup at the front door (use the desk staff to book).
Helpful hint: if there are 2 or more people in your party, a taxi is less expensive that using the shuttle bus to the Quarter House, even if you pay the round trip “discount” pre-pay price for the shuttle bus.
Our week included the French Quarter music festival, an added bonus. The entire French Quarter was super filled with people and there was music on a number of stages throughout the Quarter. We got a chance to see a bit of it on Sunday wishing we had done more but still thrilled we were enjoying the city.
New Orleans is on our “visit again” list for sure!
