“How to feel more comfortable walking to the French Quarter”
Reviewed April 21, 2011

We just returned from a four night stay at the HI Downtown and walked almost everywhere (except to the Garden District) That's what the streetcars are for...(not allowed to call them "trolleys" here) To get to Canal Street and feel comfortable, walk out the back ground level parking lot, bear to the left and walk one or two blocks down Common Street and one block left to Canal. Pick up a streetcar in the center island for $1.25 and ask for a transfer (another quarter.) I think the first left off Common Street has Montel's Bistro...traditional 2 egg, meat, toast breakfast for $3.95. The hotel was great, We leave our do not disturb card up and they left us alone...Angie the bartender is great as mentioned. We kept losing our key cards and they kept replacing them. Business center is across the overhead drive but is safe and works well. Everyone was helpful and sociable. Only complaint is that the "free van service" to the Riverfront and French Quarter is limited to 11-12 people, leaves at the top of the hour only and early evening is so busy, not everyone can get aboard which means you wait 1 more hour and try to be first on. Pickup service call later in the evenings worked like a charm. BTW...forget your car...they charge $20 /night to park, breakfast is not free for all classes of rooms, transportation to airport is $33 for a couple by taxi...no airport shuttle.

My family and I were in new Orleans for my fathers bypass heart surgery. We were in a binde because we were having to sleep in the Wating room. We walked to the holiday inn downtown new Orleans and was greeted by Ms Patrice. I explained the situation and she said don't wory we will make it work for you. Ms Patrice felt like another mother to us. She was always asking us if we need anything. The rooms were awesome. The rooms were spotless. The cleaning crew came daily to vacuum and make the beds. They have a shuttle that leaves for downtown every hour on the hour. The restaurant and bar at the bottom served the best food. This was one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in. Thanks Ms Patrice for making us feel like we were at home.

We were there on a Road Scholar trip for a week, and given the price of the rooms, we did not expect a lot. But there are murals of Old New Orleans all over the hotel and framed copies on the walls of the room - many are life size and could fool the eye, so you can hae your photo taken in front of one and become part of the scene. The breakfast buffet was abundant and delicioius, the staff were very friendly and nice.Theyrun a shtutle service to the French Quarter, theRiverfront and a couple of other spots. It is a bit hard to get a taxi there because it is not on the regular eaten track, but othewise we were extremely happy and would stay there again with pleasure.

I have stayed at this particular Holiday on multiple occasions over the past six years. It was never easy being there for the reasons I was. Angie (your bartender) has always been the sweetest and was very comforting for all of us at times, also makes a great coctail. She has gone out of her way numerous times (definitley more than her job requires) to help us which we greatly appreciate!! Thank you for everything!

Listen to Emmett, we traveled throughout the city with ease and by providing shuttle service my sister and I felt very safe. The hotel is in excellent condition and staffing A-1. We understand it was one of the first to reopen after Katrina and only one that provides on-call shuttle service. Conveniently located near Amtrak which we took from California for our great sister's land-cruise

Room Tip: Top 3 floors have lovely views...a very quiet

My Mother and I stayed here over St. Patty's day and were quite pleased with the hotel. The staff, especially Ms. Donna, were amazing and helpful. We had a bad experience with room service, but after giving a note to the chef, he called us the next morning and gave us a free breakfast. Great customer service from this place.

It's only a four or five block walk from the French Quarter. And there's a free shuttle that'll drop you for free at a few different locations around the city. The streetcar on St. Charles is only a few blocks away as well! And the hotel is happy to call a cab or airport shuttle for you, should you need one.

The rooms are decent size for not being a suite. Beds are very comfortable. Most all have private balconies, though I wouldn't recommend the 8th floor if you're looking for a balcony, because the outside door opens up to the public pool area.

Parking is expensive, though, something like $21/night. I'm glad we didn't rent a car...

Overall, though, quite a pleasant stay!

Room rate good, Staff needs some customer service training. Room Service - Not a good idea. Breakfast - rotten bananas, burnt coffee, cold toast, not worth the charge (almost $30).
