“Terrific Beef Cheeks”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

We had some friends in town for the first weekend of Jazz Fest, We had late reservations for dinner, no matter - the food is always good - my favorites are the shaved brussel sprouts and the beef cheeks!! The scallops are also very good. If you want a good drink, they make there on cola and if you add bourbon with it...WOW!!!

“Comfortable atmosphere; excellent food and wine”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

We walked past this restaurant during the afternoon, and decided to come back for dinner, based only on the look of the dining room through the window, and the menu posted outside. I'm glad we did! We sat at the bar, although the long, pleasant courtyard dining area would have been nice too. The restaurant had "patina" -- scarred wood floors, antiques, low light, a beautiful, worn copper bar surface, and nicely arranged tables.

The appetizers and entrees were nicely composed and well-prepared. I had the shredded pork shoulder medallions (formed into patties, rolled in cornmeal, and deep fried) with excellent grits and collards. The wine list had a lot of interesting choices. The bartender took excellent care of us.

If we lived in New Orleans, we would come here a lot.

“Great Brunch”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

Unfortunately I was too late to sit outside in the beautiful courtyard, but the brunch was delicious nonetheless.

“Come for the cocktails - stay for dinner”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

Sean, Merf and the team at Sylvain consistently put out an amazing evening out in the French Quarter. It's a bar, it's a restaurant - it's a barstaurant! Play your Drink Deck card here for sure.

“An Almost Hidden Gem”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Sylvain had the feel more of a Manhattan restaurant but lived up the very high food standards of New Orleans. It is situated just off Jackson Square, marked by a small sign. You walk alongside the restaurant down a sort of alley way to the back to be seated. I recommend reservations - it was busy.

Sylvain has both inside and outside seating and both were popular. The very back of the outside seating has a garden like atmosphere while the other is more like a patio. Inside was near the bar and lively. It has a very fun vibe for a higher end restaurant. It felt like mostly locals but who really knows?

We got a great table at the window for our group of 4. It is worth requesting - the two guest facing the window got to see the foot traffic going by and the two facing in had a view of the lively restaurant. Both were good views.

We started with their cheese plate with house-made pickles, the rice fritters and the roasted beef brushetta. The cheese was very good but the hit on the plate for us was the pickles - tangy and crisp. We found the rice fritter bland (the only disappointment all night) but the roasted beet brushetta was earthy and flavorful - another hit.

We tried both the shaved brussel sprout salad and the sicilian orange salad and both we would order again. The orange salad was such an interesting mix of flavors.

For entrees we had the sea scallops and beef cheeks off the menu and the grouper special. All were excellent. The grouper was the best in my humble opinion because of the quality of the fish and how perfectly it was cooked.

We tried all four dessert they had that night and the best was the Sylvain (root beer) float and the chocolate pot de creme.

We kept ordering because of the quality of the food and service. We didn't want to leave. A new fave in NOLA.
