“There's a better way to do this, read on”

I've been to the French Market a dozen times and here's the way I like to do it.
First get your beignets and coffee fix at Cafe du Monde. Then walk toward the market. As you enter the market proper, take a minute to orient yourself about what you are going to pass: drink, food, drink, food, trinkets, useless crap and wonderful people looking or trying to make a living. So about 50 yards into the market there will be a drink stand on the right. They feature a frozen pina colada in the upper left corner of their wall menu. Get one. Then start the rest of your walk. Frankly, this makes almost anything much, much better. So get you an alligator head or some handmade soap or some cheap t-shirts. There will be something that interests you; don't be a jerk, allow yourself to be interested. It costs you nothing and what else have you got to do anyway. And remember, keep sipping the colada.

“Interesting and fun”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

I had not visited the French Market in years. It is cleaner than years past, with more interesting items. There was a cooking demonstration while we were there on Creloe cooking that was fun
to watch. The spices available are amazing. I would recommend it for inexpensive souvenirs and exploring local culture. ( Bloody Mary's are great).

“Fun, local and artsy”

You can find fresh pralines, sweet potato fries, jazz musicians, and a flea market full of local and not so local pieces. Great place to wander and to find souvenirs.

“Colorful Vendors Great Place for Inexpensive Souvenirs”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

Drug my husband down for a walk through this historic marketplace. We thoroughly enjoyed its flavor and atmosphere. Lots of different vendors, and yes, I'm sure, lots of cheap, made somewhere out of the country, stuff. On the other hand, some very talented artists and above average souvenirs to take home for the tourists. Purses, hats, wallets and jewelry abound. I loved the masquerade masks of all sorts with affordable prices. Nice spot to grab a quick bite as well.

“Nice change from Burbon St....”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

As far as open markets are concerned, not too bad. A little too flea market for me but they had quite a few food stands, which were good for a quick snack. Nice change of pace from the bar scene in NOLA...I bought some Alligator Jerky for my daughter which was cool. Nice for a change of scenery. So if you are looking for a walk on a nice day in NOLA, this is a good idea...but if you do not have too much time in the city, no need to rush here.
