If you want to be a lot less touristy and hang with locals, go here and start on Frenchman St. This neighborhood is much less crowded, tacky and touristy and more authentic. Plenty of places for live music.

I now always stay in this neighborhood when visiting NOLA. It is quiet and quaint and and easy walk or bike ride to Frenchman Street and to the Quarter. Lots of coffee houses and restauants in the neighborhood and street parking is free. Nice homes to look at as you stroll the streets. Highly recommended as a place to stay or just to look around.

This little neighborhood bordering the French Quarter is just beautiful. Cross Elysian and get into the residential part and the vibe changes. It's quieter and the houses are smaller and much more interesting. It is artsy and edgy and has a population that is young and creative. Franklin street has a number of bars that are city favorites. I visited recently and found that Mimi's and Lost Love could no longer have live music. What a huge disappointment! One of the best things about the Marigny is the lively atmosphere and the safety of happy crowds of tourists and locals walking along the streets. Franklin was a hipper, realer, version of Frenchman Street, with more locals and fewer taxis. One of the things that drew me to staying in the Marigny when I visit was the music in the little bars. I did notice that there are a lot more restaurants opening further down in the Bywater. They are a lot of fun but tend to be pricey and filled with diners from other neighborhoods and tourists. i still stay in the Marigny but have to seek my music and nightlife elsewhere. Having said that, the Marigny is still my favorite place in New Orleans to stroll. It's a must see!
