Owner description: This final resting place is home to some exotic tombs, such as a pyramid-and-Sphinx mausoleum.

If you are going to visit a cemetery in New Orleans make this the one. It's conveniently located at the last stop on the Canal St. street car and it takes about 20 minutes to get there from the French Quarter. When you get off the street car, walk 1 block to the left/west and you will be greated by a statue of General Albert Sydney Johnstone on a horse at the entrance. The cemetery is not quite as glamorous as the one in Recoleta but much larger. There were quite a few mosquitoes when we went so bring bug spray.

We took a short bus tour of New Orleans and stopped at the Metairie Cemetery. Here you will see the burial techniques used (any very much necessary) in New Orleans, which is unlike any other area in the U.S.

Overall a cool thing to see, especially if you come from a city where everyone is burried below ground. I like that the cemetry is an actual city with each tomb having a legal address!
It was nice to some and spend 15 minutes walking around... but not sure how I'd spend hours or an entire day here.

We took a tour of the Metairie cemetery as part of a half day tour of New Orleans. Let's be honest, where else in the world would you do a tour of a cemetery? (or maybe I know nothing about morbid tourism). It was really interesting and even moving, especially when you look up and take note of all the different statues of angels.

At the time of our visit, we saw a masonic mausoleum, family tombs, saw the different angel statues ....

I never thought that visiting a cemetery could be so interesting but there is so much Louisiana history here that it is well worth the visit.

We drove to Metairie Cemetery, and had to approach it several different ways because Interstate 10 cuts it off from the surrounding area. We never did find a drive in gate, so we parked nearby and walked. I had to come here after seeing the equestrian statue of Confederate General Beauregard every time the airport shuttle drove me past the cemetery. By all means explore the crypt that houses the remains of five of the eight full generals of the Confederate army. There is a lot of history here. One other thing you need to know is that the incidence of crime is quite high in the very old cemeteries downtown near and in the French quarter. This cemetery is not as old, but you are safer here.
