It was interesting to see how tomb styles changed over the past 250 years, learn about the different burial types, and see the architectural influences of Spain and France in the mausoleums. Some burial sites are truly beautiful, while others are simply intriguing or quite unique.

While it may not be the oldest cemetery of the three (early-mid 1800's), it is the newer one (still active) in a better neighborhood and many good photo ops. All above ground as the others, but was underwater about 5-6' due to the Katrina flooding. It was part of the bus tour we took, which was FQ, Garden District, Upper/Lower Ninth Ward Katrina & rebuilding projects, the #3 Cemetery, City Park, Charles street, etc. About 2.5 hrs+ & well worth it. We only had about 10 minutes or so there at SLC #3. I will post photos soon. Recommended even if your not into a cemetery "daylight" tour.

All of the New Orleans Cemeteries are awesome. Because New Orleans sits below sea level, are graves are above ground. Many tombs have multiple "residents". This particular cemetery has a lot of interesting burial sites, and very religious based. You can do a tour, or go it alone, if a tour is going on at the same time as your visit, it is easy to hear tid-bits of information without the actual guidance process. It is a site to behold, interesting, a little spooky, but popular; from what I understand there's a waiting list

If you aren't familiar with this type of burial practice -- above ground -- this is a good cemetery to visit. It's huge. The structures are varied and some are quite elaborate. I visited No. 3 as part of a city tour. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is also worth visiting, but I haven't been there except to drive by it.
