Owner description: A National Historic Landmark, Old St. Patrick's Church is one of only two early landmarks of distinction left in Lafayette Square, the other being Gallier Hall. Irish immigrants built the Gothic-style church in 1840 to rival the French St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square.

This stunning, gothic church was built by the Irish in New Orleans so they could worship in English. The exterior is awe-inspiring and the interior a work of art.

We arrived at the church just as it opened for the day and we were awed as we entered the building. It is breathtaking to say the least! The stained glass, the old statues of the saints, the altar.....I could go on and on. We enjoyed the peace, tranquility and beauty of the church as we knelt in prayer. St. Patrick Church is on our "must visit again" list!

Brought the kids to experience what it should be like. We attended mass and stayed to pray the rosary. I simply love this cathedral. Easy to pray and meditate on loved ones.

Not only in the age and beauty of the building, but the essence of the worship. While visiting for a convention, walked over to attend the weekday noon mass. Near the church, just before noon, real bells chimed out to call the faithful to mass. At noon, an acolyte led the praying of the Angelus, as was once customary throughout Christendom. The church itself is beautiful, with an elaborate altar and tabernacle, and fabulous paintings behind the altar of St. Patrick, the Transfiguration, and St. Peter coming to Jesus accross the water. Stained glass windows in the dome over the altar are dedicated to each of the named angels in the bible along with the different categories of angels. Various saints or bible scenes are displayed in each of the stained glass windows along the sides of the church. The icing on the cake is that the church still has a communion rail which is in everyday use. Receiving Holy Communion on one's knees is so much more reverential. On the National Register of Historic Buildings, Old St. Pat's is worth the visit, even if you are not Catholic, but especially if you are.

World class experience. Conservative and impressive. Exactly what one would expect. Has an 11:30 and 12:00 daily Mass. This church gets down to the business end of authentic Catholicism.
