A quiet, clean place to stay. Very historic. Rooms are very nice and spacious. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Either take a cab or park in a deck if you go to the French Quarter. Its a pretty good walk!

The Rathbone is a lovely B&B just on the edge of the French Quarter. It could be walked, as the other side of the quarter is probably just over a mile away. The manager is AMAZING! He was so wonderful! The rooms are typical traditional B&B, with beautiful beds and hardwood floors, and ceiling fans. The breakfast is really good, with great choices! I will absolutely stay here again!

This Halloween I stayed at the original Rathbone for the third time. My first stay was in 1998 and when it was only the 'first' building and under different ownership/management. The current owners acquired Rathbone II across the street later. ALL of my visits have been wonderful.
Rooms/Breakfast/Staff - Ever seen a room inside the quarter? I've visited friends there - but can't stay in the historic buildings there - claustrophobia gets me on just the visit. Rathbone's rooms are generally quite spacious. Some suites will have a larger & smaller bedroom, but are still much preferred to a cracker box for twice the price (by the time you add in parking for sure). Breakfast is 'deluxe continental' - but usually includes at least one special baked goodie - pumpkin spice bread with berries, cranberry nut bran muffins, chocolate muffins, etc. THE POOL - yes, I've used it -in August. You need it then in New Orleans.
Safety/Location - It's New Orleans folks! Be alert always! Cabs are relatively affordable - $11 bucks or so from Rathbone to the Republic, well past the other side of the quarter. They may be more during Mardi Gras - but I doubt my much more than Halloween. They are in higher demand at Halloween. (I recommend Mobile for that Mardi Gras anyway.)
Rathbone is convenient to Decatur Street - great food & shops and the newly popular Frenchman St area. If tourist trap is your style, the foot of Bourbon is 6/7 blocks away. I've walked from Decatur to the Rathbone at all hours of the day and night with no trouble.
Parking - some in the drive/behind Rathbone II and on the street - but if you are there, you won't drive anywhere hardly anyhow. If you can - just fly and grab the airport shuttle. Take a cab when you need to.
I did see a comment where someone responded to a comment that you had to 'know someone' to get a good room. Uh, no. All the rooms are described online and you sign up for the one you want based on rooms, beds, price, etc. This is the first time I remember meeting the owner.

My 2 girlfriends and I stayed in a single room with access to the beautiful pool/jaccuzzi. The breakfast hostess was kind of bitter, but hey maybe she was having a bad week! Our housekeeper was very helpful with suggesting "MUST SEE" places and our turn-outs were great. We adored the owner, Tina, she too was very pleasant. We will without a doubt be visiting again & again & again.

Overall we liked the Rathbone but one experience left a bad impression.
We were impressed with the house, tons af charm, big suite, comfortable bed. We used the pool across the street everyday and it was nice, although the hottub was not working.
Now for the disappointing:
Huge suite but no where to sit, only a bed and 2 uncomfortable chairs. Plenty of room for a table and a couch or at least some chairs you could actually sit in. Location, at first we didn't mind the walk to the quarter and frenchmen street but after a few days it became tedious. Stay somewhere closer if you are going to be sight seeing. Can be noisy, the first 2 nights were nice then some other guests must have checked in near us with banging and loud noises from about 3 am to 5 am the rest of our stay. It was loud enough to wake my husband and I from a deep sleep and not be able to get back to sleep.
Now for the worst, after walking all day we returned around 4pm to go for a swim, my husband changed into his trunks and placed his shorts ontop the dresser with his underwear thrown on top. On our way out a housekeeper ( there were several we saw throughout our stay) was outside the door and told us she was going to clean the room. When we returned the room had been cleaned and my husband goes, "oh weird, she folded my underwear" When he went to get dressed he noticed the 75.00 that had been in his pocket was gone. Yeah, it was naive to leave that much money in the "open" although the pocket of a folded pair of shorts with dirty underwear on top isn't really in the open. Eitherway, it may have been naive of him but that doesn't make it right. The safe in room doesn't work and so really there is nowhere to keep valubles. At least she left his bus pass!
New Orleans is a beautiful city and that could happen anywhere. It just made the other negatives stand out more. I wouldn't stay there again even if we didn't get robbed. Just too far from everything.

A couple of years ago, we stayed at the LaMothe on Esplanade and had really enjoyed the location. In one of our long walks, we noticed this beautiful mansion w/ a lovely porch and rocking chairs. It looked so inviting. It was at 1244 Esplanade and it was the Rathbone.

We decided to head to New Orleans for a little break before the stress of the holidays sets in-beautiful weather in New Orleans in October and a lot of good deals. Booked the Rathbone through Bookit.com and paid in advance. Talked my husband's sister into coming along and she invited two friends. When we got to The Rathbone, check-in could not have been easier. Eva , who bakes amazing pumpkin bread, checked our names-said "You're paid up", handed us our keys and walked us across the street. There we were shown our room, the Jazz Fest Suite. sparkling clean, beautifully decorated and w/ a kitchenette. Eva gave us some glasses for wine drinking and said "Enjoy" Which we certainly did.

We had secure parking and were just a 10 - 15 minute walk away from French Quarter and wonderful clubs on Frenchmen St. My sister-in-law arrived and loved having her own private room. Her two friends were staying at another motel quite a ways away and when they saw our little Tennessee Williams wonderland, they were green w/ envy.

We had two tiny problems which were fixed immediately by staff-one was working the shower, which had to be done by pulling at the bottom of the bathtub faucet and another was getting on-line. That's accomplished by looking for the secure Rathbone connection (there are two Rathbone connections)and using the Inn's fax number as a password. Tiny little nitpick-it might be a good idea to include that info at check-in.

Breakfast was wonderful-fresh fruit, juice, great coffee and mostly home-made pastries. Sure, there were bagels and store-bought muffins too, but Eva's breads and coffee cakes and brownies were fantastic. Every day clean towels arrived. 5 star treatment at moderate and reasonable prices.

The pool was really nice for lounging and talking . And that rocking chair , which first beckoned us , was a great place to sit any time of the day and people watch.

We can't wait to go back. If you want to experience real New Orleans and its hospitality, stay at the Rathbone.

I took my wife here for three days and I tell you, we stayed in the "slave" bungalows in the back of the hotels. To our surprise it had very nice accomodations and they even let us check in about 6 hours early due to the fact we were driving in. The staff is great and even though we noticed a few bugs, it is New Orleans and if you cannot take that then pay the 200.00 a night and stay by the airport. This place is great and the morning breakfasts are complimented by talk of many years ago and about what to see in New Orleans. Tasty bagels and fresh baked banana breads are AWESOME, and the new Hostess for the Inn's is so nice with her new little bird on her shoulder. What a way to get away and relax, nearby all the good sights. Highly Recommended ! :)
