“Loved the balcony!”
Reviewed March 21, 2011

Our room was #47 and overlooked St Charles Avenue. It was a large room with nice balcony. The staff were very accomodating, polite and friendly. The bathroom was a little small, but worked just fine. The only drawback would be the noise from St Charles and the frequent streetcars. But this was also a plus in that a streetcar was available about every 5-10 minutes which could transport you to Canal Street. (The French Quarter was not really a walkable distance.) We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. It was nice to experience a different area of New Orleans and the location in the Garden District gave us access to this area and its many restaurants.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 4 days in March and were both pretty satisfied with the hotel. The front office was pretty helpful and friendly. Security or safety was not a problem since keys are given to guests just to enter through the front door of the hotel. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

Pros:
-Location: between Garden District and Bourbon St/Casino
-Charm: We wanted to stay at an older, local place to get more of the NOLA experience
-Service: Family owned property, always available

Minor Cons:
- Thin walls: Sleeping wasn't too much of a problem since we were worn out every day, but at times we were woken up by the music next door, conversations outside, and traffic/motorcycles driving by.
- Restroom: Overall updated and appeared modern with a hint of charm, but not very functional. More counter space would be nice and stronger plumbing/toilets (multiple flushes were needed often)

This old hotel located on the edge of downtown and the garden district could be a jewel, but we were very unimpressed with management's lack of interest in customers. We were never greeted with a smile or any enthusiasm. One employee in particular was especially annoyed
at our presence. The staff was not helpful when asked where to dine
or what to do.
The room was tiny and dated. The blankets had holes and bleach spots. The spare pillow was nasty with blood stains. Overall just worn out.
All of the room issues would probably have been overlooked but became blaring due to the poor customer service.

Someone must have been having a bad day? If it was the staff, we truly apologize, and consider guest reviews as being very helpful to the running of Avenue Garden Hotel. The AGH staff are a warm, welcoming group, all with genuine smiling faces and helpful offerings. It is odd that the writer experienced an unfriendly and helpless service from the staff. However, we know that we could have been grumpy..... for whatever reason.... and truly regret our "bad behavior".

Regarding the other remarks of the writer, we contest!

Got here on Friday afternoon for a weekend stay. I was put in a room in which the heat did not work. They tried to get it working, but after a few tries and an attempt with a space heater, ended up changing my room. For the inconvenience I was refunded $50 off of my stay. At this point, I'm slightly annoyed, but no big deal- it's an old house so I expect they often have issues like this, and as long as it's taken care of quickly, I don't mind that much.
We were moved to a larger room, that I think was nicer, but it had a nasty secret that we didn't find until our last morning there- bed bugs! I woke up at 5am and found one on a pillow! We quickly identified it (google) and verified that we were indeed infested.
The hotel let us stay as long as necessary to take care of our things- we ended up leaving about $300 worth of clothes, shoes and luggage there to be thrown away and the rest we sealed in ziplock bags to take home and boil- the only way to get rid of the nasty creatures. Taking a shower later in the day I found another bed bug in a towel on the bathroom floor- either it was on one of us when we used the towel, or in the towel, or crawled there from the other room. Either way, it was definitely an infestation.
The hotel gave me a free 2-day stay the next time we come to New Orleans. Of course, who on earth would want to stay again after that experience? I wouldn't even let an acquaintance stay there- bed bugs are too hard to deal with.
If you decide to stay here anyway, it was room 44 that had the problem. Unless the carpet, mattress and all linens are brand new, I would expect it to still be a problem.

I really wanted to like this hotel- it was charming and the location was great. But nothing can get me to stay in a room with a bunch of blood-sucking insects again!

First of all, regarding the heater, those things happen, and we swiftly remedied the situation by moving the guest, and refunding part of her stay, for the inconvenience. This hotel, like many respectable, well-kept hotels, is not immune to travelers who carry bedbugs with them. When the guests notified us upon check-out that there seemed to be an issue in their room, we immediately apologized, which was all we could do, initially, then offered a complimentary stay. When they left, we closed the room, and surrounding rooms, and had them treated professionally by solutions from an entomologist (three times for quality control). The room in question is still closed, and as an extra precaution, will be aggressively, and professionally treated, again.
As many people are not aware, bedbugs are brought into hotels by travelers. Even five star hotels are laden with incidents of bed bugs. We handled the situation, we thought, professionally. Not once did the guests mention that they discarded belongings of value, which is unfortunate. I do believe that we could have had their belongings professionally remediated of any infestation, had we been aware.
I suppose I will remove the complimentary stay from the reservation notes, as they have made it quite clear that they will not give us another visit. I hope well informed travelers understand that we did not intentionally infest their room, nor were we aware of the problem until we were informed.
A final note… we would not wish infestation on anyone… even guests who write unfavorable reviews!

We stayed for a 4 day week end and were very impressed. This is not a 5 star lux hotel, it is what it says it is, a great old home to stay comfortably for a visit to NO. Our room was clean, comfortable, and quite. The bathroom was well apointed, good water pressure for an old home. The location was great also, with the street car line steps from the door the city is at your fingertips. BarBQue place next door with good food was convienent for drinks and a quick meal. Due to storms we had to change our flight in and out, we arrived early and left late, no problem. The owner and others at the hotel are friendly and cordial, with great tips where to go, how to get there, and when to come back. We stay at many bed and breakfasts in the Cape May area of New Jersey and have to say we were pleasantly surprised with our accomadationsThey even printed our boarding passes for us before we left, called us a cab, and talked to us while we waited. This is a real gem, and we will return. Thanks for a great get away from the snow.
