“Comfortable "Southern Comfort"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast for 5 days in late March. All the reviews we read on Trip Advisor were right on the money . . . we loved the Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast in New Orleans, LA. And what made so comfortable was because of Cindee, the owner who made sure your every need was taken care. She's a great cook, a great travel agent and all around the most hospitable lady you'd ever want to meet! Her breakfasts were a "10" each morning. She made everyone feel right at home and we felt like family. This location in the Garden District/Uptown District is two short blocks from the St. Charles Trolley (and a short walk) that got us to everywhere we wanted to go. Fine restaurants are close by, too.
We were able to take the trolley to nearby hotels for pick up for other excursions we took.
Never missed that having a car. If we come back someday to New Orleans, we would certainly stay at Cindee's Southern Comfort B& B. My husband and I were both "under the weather" when we arrived and Cindee gave us special attention that no hotel would ever do.

Remember when you would travel back home and get that "Welcome Home" feeling?

Well that's exactly what you get when you stay with Cindee at Southern Comfort B-n-B! Cindee makes you feel welcome and is so very helpful with all the local information. She is very familiar with all of the best places to go and where the "locals" eat and hang out.

Southern Comfort B-n-B is so very cozy, clean, warm and inviting. When you are ready for breakfast, Cindee prepares a meal that is very healthy and tastes like your Mom's cooking!

If you are wondering where should you stay while in the "Big Easy", click on Southern Comfort and book your stay with Cindee. Our next trip will include our children and a trip to the zoo! Thanks for inviting us into your home, Cindee! We' will be back!

When my husband and I visited New Orleans for the first time recently, we were hoping for two things: proximity to the French Quarter and a quiet place to retire to after visiting the downtown area during the day. At Southern Comfort, we found that and so much more.

We found a trusted new friend, excellent cook, and advisor on every possible aspect of the city in Cyndee, the owner. She can point you towards food, historical landmarks, art, jazz and blues clubs - both the traditional and up-and-coming spots. She knows the area "like the back of her hand" and keeps apprised of all current events available during your visit. She provides you maps and information, but allows you to head in the direction to which your heart leads you. In fact, she's an excellent concierge.

When we arrived, we were just hoping for nice lodgings, but instead we were greeted with the beauty of a true Southern plantation style house, high ceilings, crown molding, and exquisite antique furniture throughout. We couldn't believe how large the rooms were for the price. We stayed in the Plantation Suite. It was lovely, and the bed was amazing. Those sheets must have been at least 700 thread count. They made me feel like a princess as I dropped into their soft welcome arms every night.

We awoke each morning with renewed energy just in time for a marvelous breakfast served up with the grace and style that only New Orleans can offer. Cyndee served up a variety of area dishes each morning, complete with coffee and fresh fruits. Everything was delicious! As a result, we rarely had to stop to eat until at least two each day.

I know that we will return to see Cyndee. Her hospitality rubs off on you. After all, everybody needs a little Southern Comfort sometimes, don't they?

I can’t speak highly enough about the Southern Comfort Bed and Breakfast. We stayed for a week in January 2010, prior to a cruise that departed from New Orleans, and we liked it so well that we stayed for two more nights when we got back. Everything was great—the neighborhood, the rooms, the beds, the food, the cleanliness, and the hostess!

We stayed in the Plantation Room, which is very large. It has its own closet, its own bathroom, and even an extra room with another bed in it. We were traveling with our adult daughter, and she stayed in that room. (You should be aware that you must go through the extra bedroom in order to get to the bathroom, but none of us found that to be a problem.) The main bedroom included a sofa, desk/vanity table, a bureau, and a big wardrobe cupboard in addition to the closet. Even the extra room had a wardrobe cupboard and a trunk. Most of the furniture was antique, which added nicely to the ambiance. The bathroom was good-sized and had a shower-tub. It had good water pressure; showers were a pleasure with that and the high-quality soap, shampoo, and conditioner. (Just about the only negative thing I can say is that it took a while for the water to warm up, but once it did there was plenty.) For part of the time we were there, we were the only guests, so we had the opportunity to look at the other guestrooms too. They were both nice.

The entire second floor of the house is the bed and breakfast. (Like many houses in New Orleans, this one was built with the living quarters upstairs, accessed by a wide outdoor stairway going up to the front porch. The ground floor was originally used for storage; the hostess lives there now.) There wasn’t wheelchair access, but the stair railings were very sturdy and there was a landing halfway up. Guests also have the use of the living room, and there is a guest kitchen with a microwave and refrigerator. (We saved a lot of money on food by eating at restaurants at lunchtime, then heating up our leftovers for dinner.

The breakfasts were always good, and they were full breakfasts (many places only provide a continental breakfast). They started with New Orleans-style coffee; there’s real half-and-half for it too. There was juice and fresh fruit in one form or another. The Crème Brulee French Toast was particularly good. Another favorite was a quiche with artichoke hearts in it. The place settings changed from day to day, so you never knew what cute dishes and table linens would be waiting for you. We especially liked the alligator centerpiece, decorated for Mardi Gras; it was wearing sparkly nail polish.

What really makes this B&B most outstanding, though, is the hostess, Cindee. She is fun to be around and incredibly knowledgeable about the area. No matter what you want to do—eat at a good restaurant, hear jazz or some other kind of music, look at plantation houses, tour the city—she can tell you the best places and the best people. She went above and beyond the call of duty for us and yet always made us feel like it was a pleasure for her to have us there. We didn’t just find a good place to stay. We made a good friend.

My wife and I stayed at the Southern Comfort B&B for three nights on a recent visit to New Orleans. We normally choose hotels when traveling, but my wife had found this site online and wanted to try a bed and breakfast for a change. The hostess/owner, Cindee, not only made us feel very welcome but made the entire trip more enjoyable with suggestions for food and entertainment.

First off, a review of the essentials of a bed & breakfast: the bed and the breakfast! The bed was very comfortable (we stayed in the Horizon Room), the room quite nice and incredibly quiet (more than we are used to, in fact - smile). We had a great night's sleep all three nights. Each morning, breakfast was exceptional. Every day started with coffee (already available when we woke up), and my wife and I had a cup on the front porch swing while Cindee was completing and plating breakfast two of the mornings (turned a bit nippy that last morning). Breakfast was always plentiful and tasty. The only thing I left sitting was a fruit concoction she had available in a glass one morning -- and there were five empty glasses at the other plates, so I suppose it was just my personal taste.

Breakfast is, of course, eaten around the dining room table with the other guests. Having only three rooms meant six guests total, and we had a nice conversation each morning discussing what we had done the night before, what was planned for the day, and wishing everyone an enjoyable day.

As to location, Southern Comfort is not near the French Quarter, the normal NO destination, but is a short walk to St. Charles and you can catch the trolley which dumps you right at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal. Cabs were at the Southern Comfort within ten or fifteen minutes, and cost about $12-$15 to and from the French Quarter, French Market, or Riverwalk. Between cabs, the trolley, and using our personal car (parking is a *nightmare* in New Orleans; I quickly ditched the personal car) we had no problem getting around.

If a Bed & Breakfast is your thing, the Southern Comfort is a great choice for New Orleans. You'll get lots of tips for entertainment, where to eat (we would never have tried Jacques-Imo's without Cindee's suggestion, and it was great), and current happenings in the city, and have a nice, relaxing stay.

Southern Comfort is a grand old house that is a delightful place to stay. The high ceilings, wood floors, warm rugs and antique furnishings create a genuine ambiance that cannot be found in hotels or resorts. The location in an uptown neighborhood provides an opportunity to see something other than tourist attractions in New Orleans. The Garden District is a short walk away.

Cindee is a wonderful hostess and a font of knowledge for those unfamiliar with the city. Her breakfast entrees are delicious. She went out of her way to make our stay memorable. For example, she came up with some soy milk for us on very short notice.

This small Uptown B&B, located in a residential area two blocks off the St.Charles Street Car line between the Garden District and Tulane, is simply superb. Lovely comfortable rooms, excellent breakfast, quiet neighborhood but within walking distance of fine restaurants, and the resident owner-host of the establishment is the nicest person you're ever likely to meet. This place is a gem. Allow plenty of time if you're depending on the streetcar to get you to your destination. The schedule can be quite erratic.
