“I would not stay here if I were you”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2012

Nice location, however the owner/caretaker is quite rude and peculiar. Although I didn't expect lavish hospitality, at $350/night, I expected common courtesy, which was not to be found. She spent the first 10 minutes lecturing us not abuse her many feral cats. We were scolded for asking for fresh towels (2 days into our stay). There is no breakfast at this "bed and breakfast" unless other guests left something behind in the fridge to eat. There were cockroaches in the room and the bedsheets were worn. Definitely overpriced. I would never stay here again...even at 1/2 the price

Room Tip: Just don't stay here at all

The sophisticated traveler chooses the Claiborne Mansion in New Orleans in order to have a unique experience of the historic French Quarter. Its wonderfully-convenient location around the corner from lively Frenchmen Street and a charming residential area makes it an especially attractive choice. Cleo, its proprietress, is charming and very helpful. The rooms are comfortable, filled with period ambience and clean and tidy. I scratch my head wondering about the negative reviews on this site ... There's no doubt that I will return to this inn with great enthusiasm!

Stayed with my 3 sisters for 4 wonderful days this month. The Mansion is beautiful, our suites were spotless and Cleo is a gem! She treated us like family and gave us the run of the house. Our tour with friend Tyrone was better than ever and so personal to our tastes. Don't miss the Port of Call burgers, Three Muses, & Cafe Nichaud for breakfast. We would definitely stay at Claiborne again and give it a 5 star recommendation.

Simply...do not stay here. The owner is rude beyond compare. Do not expect breakfast and heaven forbid you should need additional clean towels. One reviewer noted how she hates her doorbell...this is true and she lets you know it. How else you are supposed to enter is quite beyond me. She also noted that she didn't care if we stayed there. This must be a routine greeting for her. With so many other options in New Orleans...including in that neighborhood...do NOT waste your money here.

No. Claiborne Mansion is not the Hilton nor was meant to be and Cleo Pelleteri is not the plastic hostess you will find on the desks of commercial hotels. Cleo shares her home with travellers who frequent her inn; once the guest realizes that they will no doubt find her charming, witty, incredibly forthright. She is a true piece of New Orleans and one I have always enjoyed. The location at the back of the French Quarter is quiet unlike the Bourbon Street locations. The rooms are immaculate and the gradens wonderful; b&b's need not have the finest service since the guest is getting so much more from a stay at Claiborne Mansion. This is the closest thing to "laissez les bon temps roulez" which, I for one want to see protected for guests to this city;

As first-time travelers to New Orleans my family and I picked the Claiborne based on an article in Travel & Leisure Family. It was also remarkably inexpensive. Of course, you get what you pay for. The article noted that it was near the French Quarter, which it is, but all public transportation comes to the end of the line on the opposite side of the Quarter and then it's a LONG walk. The single Marigny bus line runs infrequently which leaves you the Riverside streetcar which is still 10 minutes away.
Now for the good part. Dirty does not begin to describe this place. Dingy rooms, stained sheets (!!!), dirty bathrooms and a giant cockroach that remained in the stairwell throughout our five-night stay. It became our private joke. No one emptied the garbage, no one touched the beds or the towels.
The owner, Cleo, is rude beyond belief. Three examples from the evening we arrived:
Me: Are you expecting rain in the next few days?
Her (pointing): That's what the TV is for.
Also:
Me: Is there air conditioning? (It was warm in the room although she had been expecting us)
Her (long, long stare): Ma'am, this is the South, what do you THINK?
After the last exchange I just walked away and told my husband to not bother speaking to her any longer.
Me: We were thinking of going to Acme bar for raw oysters tonight.
Cleo: I wouldn't go THERE!
I asked here three times what she would recommend as an alternative and she absolutely refused to answer saying over and over:
Well don't let ME dissuade you from going to ACME!
It was so unfortunate because when we woke up the next morning we felt completely stranded in a city in which we were totally unfamiliar. Simple questions that you need to ask an owner/concierge couldn't be answered such as "Where's the bus?" or "Where can we buy a map?" Fortunately, but oddly, she disappeared for the remainder of our stay and I never laid eyes on her again. All I could think is: Why in the world is this person in the HOSPITALITY business???
One final note: definitely do not bother if you are a light sleeper. The hotel is close enough to the train tracks to hear the trains passing through all night long and it's painful.
