“A Must Do”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

The one place in NOLA they always say you must have the beignets, and these are classic. We've been here many times, but this time we had a bad waitress. She sat in her chair, staring at her section until 3 new tables were full waiting for her. Then, she came up and took all of our orders at once. Of course, we were the first of the 3 tables, and sat and waited while others who sat in different sections after us were served quickly. Yes, we'll always go back.

“Café du Monde: Name Says it All”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

Café du Monde is a very special place. A true New Orleans icon. Any visit to the Crescent City must include Café du Monde. If you miss it, then, friend, you ain’t been to New Orleans.

Café du Monde has made gradual changes over the years, but the basic features still exist. The menu basically consists of four items, the heavenly beignets (a sort of French doughnut liberally covered with powdered sugar); strong Chicory coffee; milk; and the combination, the fantastic Café au Lait (coffee with lots of milk added).

On this recent visit our trip plans had been turned upside down. We were lucky to get to Café du Monde for one afternoon. Things are about as always. There is the wait or search for a table in the popular outside dining area (they also have a smaller eating area inside). This time we found a table immediately, but our server must have been in Baton Rouge when we occupied our seat, but he eventually arrived to take our order and things proceeded as normal from that point. Service has always been a bit erratic at Café du Monde—it is to be expected and is part of the tradition. I’m not bothered by this quirk. I expect and accept it.

We shared just one order of beignets (probably a first!) and each of us had a cup of café au lait. There have been many times when I would consume two or more orders of beignets myself, but not on this recent occasion.

Also customary—and substantially impossible to avoid—our clothing was noticeably covered by powered sugar when we completed our visit. (With great effort I restrained myself and did not blow extra sugar onto my companion’s dark clothing).

The visit was unusual in one respect. We did not hear any street musician playing for money on the nearby Decatur Street sidewalk. That was a disappointment, but all else went quite well. Our experience, as always, was thoroughly enjoyable.

Do not miss Café du Monde!

“Doesn't live up to the hype”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

If you want to eat mediocre food in a chaotic environment, then venture here. Love waiting in lines to get a table and then waiting even longer to have the table cleaned, then order, then wait some more for food to come? Then come on down! The beignets were thin and chewy and they were difficult to enjoy while crammed into a tiny space practically sitting on the lap of the neighbouring customers. I would give it a miss and try somewhere else.

They were good. Small but good. Had larger ones at Cafe Beignet. But really, how much fried dough can you eat? I liked the chicory coffee here, quite a bit. Nice mild flavor.

“Cafe au lait so good you'll never want to go back to the same old coffee!”
Reviewed November 9, 2012 via mobile

Cafe du Monde is a New Orleans institution. They serve steaming hot cups of cafe au lait & plates of beignets with an obscene amount of powdered sugar piled on them. They have moved on to frozen coffee as well, but I can't ever pass up the hot to try it! Men & lady servers in paper hats running in between the tables getting the job done. This is people watching at it's best. Must do in New Orleans, even if you get it to go.
