We love the Soniat House! This was our second stay at the gorgeous property and we will return on our next visit to New Orleans. We visited for a week in late June/early July for our honeymoon and were upgraded from a junior suite to a suite when we arrived (such a lovely surprise!) The suite was sumptuous; filled with beautiful antiques and a spectacular bathroom that I can only dream about having in real life. We loved sharing coffee and biscuits on the large deck over looking Chartres Street.

The attention to detail at the Soniat House is unsurpassed. The staff is more than kind and gracious and the location is perfect. It is a one of a kind place, filled with art, antiques and a realized appreciation for the beauty of relaxation and just "being". Obviously, it is place of which the proprietors are truly passionate and their staff who seem to regard it similarly.

We can't hardly wait to return.

The best feature of the Soniat House is the staff. From the front desk, to housekeeping and room service, the staff members we encountered were uniformly courteous and helpful. However, the room rates are excessively high for the room accommodations provided. As an earlier reviewer noted, the room decor did remind us a bit of a visit to grandmother's house: antiques and odd pieces of furniture. If you are expecting room furnishings and features available at typical four and five-star hotels, you will be disappointed. This is the first hotel at which I have stayed in years that did not have even a one cup automatic coffee maker in the room (coffee, however, is available from room service for $12). There are much better hotel values in the French Quarter.

I have read with sadness and chagrin some of the recent comments about Soniat House. Perhaps it is a reflection of our time or a clouding of the lens through which we should see things of value. I have visited Soniat House over the decades, at varied stages of my life, Each visit was , as it should be, reminding me that civility and charm are the arts of hospitality.

The Japanese favor an aesthetic that understands how time enhances beauty. Soniat House has always been wonderfully kept but so careful in its homage to the past. There is, for those wishing to see it, a joy in each shadow and a composition not unlike art. For Soniat, is art of a unique kind. It is a memory but not of the past. It is a reminder of a wonderful life while that life is still in reach.

A final word...The owners love this place. It is not simply on a balance sheet and surely not seeking to be what it should not be. For those who understand what New Orleans means, who savor the sound and scent of history, and who simply melt at the idea of starting the morning with biscuits served on hot bricks outside your door.....Soniat House should call out to you.

Thank you so much for your eloquent response to the few unfavorable reviews that Soniat House has received this summer.
As you mentioned Rodney and I truly love the Soniat House. It is our life's work. When we receive a review such as yours we feel that we have succeeded.
Thank you for again for taking the time to write. We appreciate your support.

This hotel has been around for ever. Apparently so have the rooms, the decoration, the air conditioning and the damp in the rooms

The queen bed was two singles pushed together. The courtyard view was the porthols in the room door - no windows

Be prepared to wear noise cancelling headphones all night if you leave the airconditining on or wake up in a sauna if you don't. Beware room 17. Every little noise from upstairs can be heard very clearly.

The biscuits in the morning however are a real treat.

My husband and I stayed at the Soniat House as a birthday treat from September 13-15, 2012. The last time we stayed there together was 22 years previously, so it was also a trip down memory lane.
The property is old and as to be expected, not to be compared to newer, 5 star hotels. What my husband and I couldn't understand, however, is how management could allow the courtyard area with it's garden and pond to get so run down! Soniat House really needs to put some effort into this crucial area to bring the property back to where it will be a pleasure to spend time there with a drink and some quiet ambiance.

We are so sorry that you were disappointed with the condition of our courtyard. As you have also experienced we are at the end of a very hot, wet summer which isn't very kind to plants. Fortunately the bricks had been powerwashed the day before your arrival but unfortunately we had not yet attended to the pond or the foliage. That was all on last weeks schedule but once again rain interfered. The refurbishing of the pond is underway and the landscapers are due on Thursday, weather permitting. Since you are nearby we would love to have you come back as our guest for a couple of nights in the Fall to enjoy the courtyard at its best.
Please call when you see that you can again get away for a couple of nights. 800-544-8808 or email stay@soniathouse.com

I'm shocked that there are any positive reviews of this place. We had a bad experience from checkin to checkout. The people at the desk were so rude and obviously didn't want to be bothered - shocking for a place that touts itself on hospitality. And then our room was gross - stained carpets, cheap and tattered window treatments, backed-up bathtub, smelly, etc. There is a serious need for renovation, and there is nothing charming or chic about the shabby conditions. For a city as charming as New Orleans, almost anywhere else must be better than this (and at a fraction of the price).

My sincere apologies. There is no excuse ever for rudemess . It is evident from 2 complaints about rudeness just under 6 weeks that we have a problem which we will resolve immediately.
As you undoubtedly noticed as you were with us in August we were in the middle of our summer refurbishing. Since you note that you were in New Orleans on business you must have been with us during the week when drop cloths and ladders are evident everywhere.I am sorry that you evidently were assigned a room that had not been refurbished yet. A call to the Front Desk would have had your drain problem corrected immediately. With only 30 rooms which fortunately stay booked most of the year it is fiscally impossible for us to take more than 3 at a time out of service> We do all of the refurbishing during the summer months and reduce our rates significantly until the work is finished. Again please accept my sincere apology and give us a second try some day soon.

Hard to believe what's behind the door. The picture takers on the street have no idea what they're photographing. We were transported back in time when Calvin answered the doorbell. Gracious and kind southern hospitality. This property has everything you want for a complete getaway. The location is great! It's close enough to the action but far away enough to avoid the throngs of people and noise. The room was charming and we were upgraded to one with a balcony overlooking the lush courtyard. Breakfast was served on our balcony and couldn't have been better. From the staff to the 200 year old building this is a can't miss for your next New Orleans visit. By the way, leave the kids home and enjoy the romance and the honor bar.
We'll be back!!!

Room Tip: Ask for one with balcony overlooking courtyard
