This is a lovely, clean and comfortable hotel with a central location in the French Quarter. You can access everything you need from here on foot: the entire French Quarter and the Mississippi River, public transportation, fine dining restaurants, casual and affordable restaurants, shopping of all sorts, pharmacies, fast food... you name it.
J.W. Marriot offers everything you would expect for the price, but what is astonishing is the level of customer service I received. I've never had so many people anticipate my needs before I even opened my mouth. It really made an impression.
We arrived late to find that our room had no cold water, due to some issues with the city itself. I had resigned myself to a long, irritating process of moving to a new room, but there was someone at our room to help us move within 5-10 minutes.
The bell hop, Mr. A. Carter, went out of his way to assist us. He was aware that our new room did not have such a nice view as our original one. He made a few calls on his headset and had us moved to the very top floor The view was a highlight of our stay, and my 12 year old son was delighted.
Another day, my son and I had gotten lost site-seeing, and we made it back to the hotel absolutely desperate for water. I had just one foot in the door before a valet (I think), Mr. W. Jenkens, had retrieved two bottles of water and put them into our hands. He said, "You two look very thirsty."
Everywhere we went in the hotel, people were genuinely looking to see how we were doing and actively trying to think of ways to make us feel happier.
We did not have occasion to eat at the hotel, or use the spa, but we did use the gym and pool. The pool is small and on the roof, which is not surprising given the packed downtown location of the hotel. I imagine it could get very crowded and pointless during a busy period, but we did not have problems when we visited. There was a lovely woman there who showed us around at great length one afternoon, and I wish I had her name.
I must admit I am easy to please when it comes to rooms. All I want is something clean with a soft bed. The rooms were nothing amazing, but they were perfectly maintained, and we al agreed the beds were comfortable. As I said, our view of the French Quarter and MIssissippi was very special.
Note that there is also a Marriott on Canal street. These are two separate properties. That gave us a bit of confusion.
Our room was comped, since my husband was attending a business conference. I would probably had been more resentful of little fees, if that had not been the case. There is a $14.95 charge for internet per day, which irks me. I heard the valet fee was $20 per day, but then later I heard $40. I hope the latter is not true, as it seems incredibly steep, but I imagine it's competitive with other parking prices in the Quarter.
I would absolutely come here again and look forward to it, if I was to return to NOLA.
