“I love the Cornstalk!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013 via mobile

I stayed at the Cornstalk recently when I was in town to see Wicked, and I loved this hotel! The location is perfect and the hotel is beautiful. The rooms are on the smaller side but there was plenty of room for me and my traveling companion. The sheets were super comfy and the room was very clean. The hotel staff was very friendly and laid back. It feels like a bed and breakfast (without the breakfast). We stayed on the first floor in room 4. There wasn't a thermostat in the room but the hotel was kept at a comfortable temperature and they provide little fans and heaters for the rooms if you want one. They also told us that they would adjust the temp if we needed them too. The hotel is in the perfect location and you can get anywhere you want in the French Quarter in 5 mins, we were even able to walk to the theatre! So many buggy tours and tourist in general stop and take pictures of the hotel. I was probably photographed 50 times during my 2 night stay! I would bet that this is one of the most famous residences in the Quarter and it was so great to be able to have the chance to stay here! The Cornstalk is the perfect place for travelers who value and appreciate experience and atmosphere over frou-frou mainstream hotel-ness. I will definitely stay here again!

My mom and I stayed in the French quarter for 4 days and share a room at the Cornstalk hotel.

The location of this hotel was perfect. It is right in the heart of the French Quarter. My mom and I parked our car for the whole trip and walked everywhere. It is located off of Royal street with a hidden café right across the street, and a coffee shop less than a block away.

This hotel is also a little tourist attraction, but fear not, there are no tours being conducted inside or outside the hotel. At the most some of the walking tours and carriages stand outside the fence and simply explain its history to the tourists. The hotel still remains private for its guests even on this busy street.

Louis and Jana are very accommodating hosts. You could contact Louis for emergencies 24-7 if needed by text message and I believe he stayed on the property most of the time.

This hotel was very clean. It was cleaned once a day everyday. No mold in the bathroom, no funky smells in the room and the sheets on the bed were clean and soft.

The balcony and the courtyard were beautiful. You will not go wanting for beautiful scenery at this hotel.

This hotel was surprisingly quiet. We were never kept up all night from the noises of the French quarter or other guests. With that being said, if you are planning to party hard in your hotel room, look elsewhere. Being loud, drunk, and obnoxious at all hours of the night would be very inappropriate at this hotel. If you wanted to party hard and then return to your room for a quiet evening, then this is the place for you.

The only thing that could be a problem for some guests is the size of the rooms. Some of the rooms are a bit small, but this was no issue for us.
Overall Impression: Clean, quiet, private, adorable one of a kind hotel. I will stay here for every visit to the French quarter.

We were very satisfied for our money as the hotel is clean, cozy, quiet, and climate controlled. My husband has asthma and allergies and had no problems. Louis and other staff are very helpful and accommodating. We've never been photographed so much in our lives as this is the stop for all tourists on Royal. Sitting out on the balcony, you get the real feel of the Quarter at night, or drinking your coffee/tea in the morning. We'll be back!

We had a delightful four nights at the Cornstalk. I loved the decor. Our room had gold curtains, a gold painted ceiling, a chandelier, antique furniture (some of it a bit wobbly), a beautiful bay window and red and gold fabric wall coverings. The building is nearly 200 years old, so the chic is getting a little bit shabby, but the interior was a perfect compliment to the hotel's location right in the middle of the French Quarter. The manager was a bit hard to pin down, but we weren't looking very hard. It took two days to learn he actually lived in the hotel. If you want the usual front desk service, somebody to open doors for you or carry your suitcases, this is not the place for you, but we liked being left to our own devices. I would describe the ambience as something like an elegant boarding house. We spent an enjoyable evening on the balcony with two other couples and they too seemed to be enjoying their stay. There may have been problems with the airconditioning in the past, but we had full control of the temperature in our room. We would stay again and bring friends.

I had a week in NOLA, and hoped to spend it all at the Cornstalk. They were booked for two nits of my stay, so I started the week at the Monteleone. Monteleone wins, hands down. The Cornstalk is like a hostel, but $200 a night. The room was VERY dark and cold. No thermostat in the room. No shampoo either! Or glasses for water! Turned out that was behind a curtain near the rear desk (not a front desk, as it's at the very back of the hotel). The desk was rarely manned when we were there, so it was hard to get help. All the rooms that should be public areas (parlor, dining room) are now bedrooms, so there are no places in the hotel to sit and read. the TV in the room was so small as to be laughable. The internet was slow and spotty. The last night there were guests in the courtyard making a racket until at least 1 am, when I went out to ask them to quiet down. No sign of the manager. There are a lot of better choices in the Quarter and no reason to choose the Cornstalk over them. Just an expensive, COLD, dark room.

We would like to sincerely apologize for any displeasure or discomfort that this guest received while they were staying at the Cornstalk Hotel. We appreciate their opinion and hope that we can use any criticism to improve our service.

The Cornstalk Hotel does have a resident manager who is available 24 hours a day. During the stay, the guest had spoken with the assistant manager numerous times and did not voice any of these issues. Hotel staff would have been happy to remedy any of these issues, had they been aware of them.

The hotel is kept at a comfortable temperature between 68º and 70º. The room in question is one of the brightest rooms in the hotel during the day as it is a corner room with the castle turret and stained glass windows. It is possible that the guest was unaware that the crystal chandelier has a dimmer switch that can be adjusted as needed. The room in question is only dark at nighttime if the dimmer switch is turned to the low setting.

Lastly, we would like to assure any future guests that we appreciate all the reviews that we receive and that we use any criticisms given to improve our service and accommodations.

Checked in early evening on a Friday when we met the proprietor and desk worker who gave us a comprehensive handout of restaurants and things to do ;but that was the last we saw of them. We had to wait 2 hours for someone to arrive to settle up the bill the evening before we left. This old Victorian historic home with tall ceilings and too many chandeliers to count had a small yard and fountain out front which could be enjoyed from the second floor patio. Our room was small but had 2 windows and the door on the chifforobe would not stay shut. There was a used bar of soap left in the shower and none on the sink. No basic amenities like water glasses or shampoo were in in the room but those items as well as wine glasses and ice were available in a cubby behind a hanging curtain at the bottom of the stairs; one day we had a rug in the bathroom for 6 hours and although the room was cleaned daily, the used glasses were not taken away. No coffee or tea were offered, not even packets or plug in pots which were sorely missed upon awakening.
On the plus side, the location was smack dab in the middle of the French quarter and a ten minute walk to the conference we were attending.
Could probably do better to book elsewhere...would not recommend this place..
Have travelled the world extensively and am not particularly picky but this place left alot to be desired in terms of basic needs.
