Owner description: Get wherever you want to go in New Orleans with the Regional Transit Authority (RTA). Our extensive network of buses and streetcars winds throughout every neighborhood of the Crescent City. From Uptown to Downtown, from Lakeview to the Lower Nine, from Mid-City across the Mississippi River and to the parish lines, the RTA goes there. As streetcars glide underneath grand live oaks and past stately mansions, they offer up relaxing views of the beauty, charm and history of New Orleans for little cost. When riders board these historic vehicles they are boarding a piece of movable New Orleans history. The RTA operates three streetcar lines: the famous, historic St. Charles line, the Canal Street line, and the Riverfront line. All lines either run along or intersect with Canal Street in the area between the French Quarter and the Central Business District (CBD) connecting Uptown/Garden District, Carrollton, Mid-City, City Park and the Marigny. The RTA is currently adding more Streetcar lines.

The St. Charles Streetcar is like stepping back in time with the varnished wood seats. The streetcars are frequent on the trip heading into the Garden District but we walked the entire trip back and never had one pass us. Great way to see the parade route for Mardis Gras parades and see the leftover beads in the trees.

The streetcars are still a working part of the public transit system. Tourists should consider the one day $3 jazzy pass which gets you unlimited trups for the day. Be aware of the schedule if you are getting on and off for sight seeing, shopping, etc.

We enjoy getting around New Orleans by foot, or by streetcar. The RTA claims that the streetcars run every 15 minutes. But we found that in the evening, the St. Charles Streetcar ran only about every 45 minutes, which was often inconvenient.

We took advantage of the Street Cars to get around NOLA on our stay. Cost was $1.25 to board. You could also buy a day pass. Bring bills and coins as they can't give change. The Streetcar operators were super kind to tourists, patiently explaining the systems and the routes. We rode in the evening when the cars were mostly empty and we got to see a lot of sites. However, we saw that duing the day, the Streetcars were PACKED full of people.

There is construction being done on this line so we couldn't take it all the way to the end, but it was only $1.50 each way and it was well worth the $3 to take a ride into the Garden District and gain the experience of a trolley ride.

From Canal, you can pick this street car up at the corner of Carondelet (the street that Bourbon turns into once crossing Canal) or around the block at the corner of St. Charles and Common Streets. You can buy a 1-day trolley pass for $3 to ride any of the trolleys an unlimited amount of times. There are other pass options available as well and the passes can be bought at any of the ticket kiosks on Canal. If buying on the trolley, you will need exact change of your ticket.
