It is a cemetery . But the history of New Orleans is so unique we thoroughly enjoyed our visit . We went on a guided tour and it was very informative . Check it out. See history.

“not well kept”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

We tok the St. Charles streetcar especially to see the Lafayette cementery. We were however disappointed. The place is not well kept, the graves are old and as an older local visitor told us, the city governement is not interested because it is a private cementery.
Look at some of the pictures I make and you will understand my feeling.
The cementery is mentioned in the New Orléans tourist information as a must, but I suggest you forget about it although the area is nice to visit with many beatiful mansions

“Cool”

Met Carla when we walked in the gate. The doors were closing in 15 minutes but she gave us a quick tour for tips. Not sure if all the stories were factual but we were entertained and left smarter!

“What luck!!”
Reviewed January 17, 2014

We did not sign up for a cemetary tour but we rode the St. Charles Streetcar to Washington Street and walked down to the cemetary. There was a nice lady there that offered to give us a 15 minute tour on tips. We enjoyed learning about the cemetary and what make NOLA different in how they care for the deceased. It was just enough information without being drawn out. Hope you catch her there....
