The cemetery is lovely - a mix of older, crumbling graves, and brand new ones. There was so much to learn - and thank goodness we contacted ToursbyJudy.com. I had a very tight conference schedule and she easily accommodated us. We received over an hour a rich and accurate history of the cemetery and much of New Orleans itself. Just was funny and personable. I felt by the end as if a good friend had just shown me around her city! -Jessica Jefferson

Not my usual vacation trip but really interesting especially the plot Nichols Cage has bought. Free to attend closes at 3 every afternoon and mid day Sundays. Well worth pending half an hour to understand how a natural cremation works in the tombs. Sounds morbid but really interesting.

I love touring thru this cemetery, tour guide told us about the Voodoo Queen, the reason why the tombs are built above ground, lots of history. I would not go to this cemetery alone, always take a tour with other tourists, just to be on the safe side.

We went here looking for Marie Laveau's grave. We got a kick out of the "offerings" that were left there and all the X's on her grave. We read about the X's and making wishes so we did it for kicks-n-grins. It was fun and didn't take it seriously. Like looking at the old plots there and sad how time and the flood and done so much damage. If you're in to that sort of thing, would recommend it.

If you're visiting New Orleans, St. Louis #1 is must see. There's so much history here, and the burial practices are unique. There's the alleged grave of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, the monument where the graveyard scene in the movie Easy Rider was filmed, the grave of Homer Plessy of Plessy v. Ferguson, and the future resting place of actor Nicholas Cage.

I'd recommend taking a guide tour though, preferably with a group that supports the preservation, restoration and protection of NOLA's historic cemeteries such as Save Our Cemeteries or Historic New Orleans tours. You'll learn so much more than by stumbling around graves by yourself.
