Please be aware, that this is a cemetery and as such should be treated with the respect that you would provide any Cemetery. Yes, There are many famous and infamous people buried here. Marie Laveau The Voodoo queen being the most famous occupant, along with Homer Plessy, of the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision on civil rights.
However, Finding a good tour group is the recommended way to go! Why? because this cemetery is next to the projects in NO. You don't want to go down there and get lost, or find that you've ended up in a place that isn't safe!

St. Louis Cemetery #1 is the oldest and most famous. It was opened in 1789. I looked it up and saw that Marie Laveau (vodoo priestess) was buried here. Mourners go to her gravesite, and you could see all of the flowers, candles let of their mourning.

There a many wonderful tour companies in New Orleans (I recommend Strange True tours) who have interesting cemetery tours, but you should also explore a bit on your own.

We were walking aroung the cemetery and supposedly a cemetery employee wanted to show us a few things. We acceped willingly thinking we would surely give him a nice tip. At the end of the tour he then informed us that this was a pay tour for $15 each. ASK BEFORE SOMEONE GIVES YOU A TOUR.
