Owner description: Originally founded in 2000 as The National D-Day Museum, The National WWII Museum is now the top-rated tourist destination in New Orleans, TripAdvisor's #4 museum in the country, and an unforgettable way to experience World War II—from industrial efforts on the Home Front to the combat experience of the American servicemember abroad. Offering a compelling blend of sweeping narrative and poignant personal detail, the Museum features immersive exhibits, multimedia experiences, and an expansive collection of artifacts and first-person oral histories to take visitors inside the story of the war: why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. Beyond the galleries, the Museum offers unique access to experiential history, including the opportunity to tour and even ride on an authentically restored PT-boat, tours behind the scenes to handle artifacts alongside Museum curators, and an impressive collection of restored and working macro-artifacts to discover. In addition, online collections, virtual field trips, webinars, educational outreach, travel programs, and renowned International Conference offer patrons new ways to connect to history and honor the generation that sacrificed so much to secure our freedom. Designated by Congress as the official WWII museum of the United States, The National WWII Museum is located in downtown New Orleans on a six-acre campus, where five soaring pavilions house historical exhibits, on-site restoration work, a period dinner theater, and restaurants. A capital expansion program includes the construction of two additional pavilions in coming years, cementing the institution as a state-of-the-art educational institution and a premiere destination for travelers from around the world. Museum exhibits and the Museum Store are open seven days a week, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. All venues are closed Mardi Gras Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

“Great Experience”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

The National WWII Museum is located near Lee Circle in the Warehouse District between St. Charles and Magazine Street. The museum provides an excellent amount of WWII information for all levels of historical interest.

The best feature of the museum is the "Beyond All Boundaries" 4D movie experience narrated by Tom Hanks. It is a great way to tell the story of WWII and the significance of the events of this war.

There are a few gift shop areas that have some pretty neat stuff, especially for anyone with family members from WWII.

It was a great experience to see the museum and the movie was very touching leaving many with tears afterward. It is a great reminder of our country's liberty and significant sacrifices of past generations.

“Take your time!”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

Being a bit of a history nerd, despite knowing a lot about WW2 I decided to visit the museum. It was an easy, pleasant walk from the French Quarter (I would say perhaps 30 min total from my hotel). The museum itself was such a surprise. I loved the movie (definitely worth the extra money) and the exhibits were so well-thought out and displayed, with plenty of information available. The entire museum is very US-centric but given that it is the national WW2 museum in the US, this wasn't unexpected and does not detract from the experience in the slightest. Very, very worth the visit.

“Humbling Experience”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

Started out by watching the 4D IMAX movie "Beyond All Boundaries" in the theater across the street from museum. Good way to start off your visit. The movie was pretty good.... Would NOT reccommend taking children under the age of 10 into it though. There are loud sounds, bright flashes of light, moments of complete darkness, and also a few cuss words (one being GD) and graphic pictures. The museum is always a favorite. They are adding 2 new buildings across the street and a new train exhibit, so hope to go back soon to see the additions. You can find a coupon for the museum at neworleanscoupons.com

“A must see”
Reviewed November 21, 2012

You will need more than one day to see it all. We returned a second day and were allowed back in though one volunteer did challenge us about it. The movie was OK but not worth the time.

Very well done and extremely fascinating. A must for the WWII buff.
The museum is easy to get too and also has a movie when you need a little rest.
