Owner description: New Orleans' Preservation Hall was established in 1961 to honor one of America's truest art forms - Traditional New Orleans Jazz. Operating as a music venue, a touring band, and a non-profit organization, Preservation Hall continues its mission today as a cornerstone of New Orleans music and culture. Situated in the heart of the French Quarter on St. Peter Street, the Preservation Hall venue presents intimate, acoustic New Orleans Jazz concerts over 350 nights a year featuring ensembles from a current collective of 100+ local master practitioners. On any given night, audiences bear joyful witness to the evolution of this venerable and living tradition.

Timeless music. It always amazes me how many fantastic street musicians play in New Orleans. They don't make much money, but who's to say it's a bad life?

I first sat in these hallowed spaces in the early 70s. The players now look younger, the jazz is still great - I'm just getting older.

It remains an intimate venue with musicians sitting in for a song or two.

Go. Prepare to be not just entertained but transported.

It was worth the 60+ minute wait. Very intimate and jazz that would knock your socks off. This is New Orleans. Would love to go back.

Preservation Hall is a must do in New Orleans. It's a very small venue, and it's well worth paying the price for a "Big Shot" pass, so that you are seated first at the front of the room. And, you don't have to wait in line for the general admission tickets and then wind up standing at the back of the room. Life is too short to sit in the cheap seats. Spring for the "Big Shot" pass online. It's a 50 minute set and you'll be asked for requests. Go prepared. Unfortunately on the evening of our visit, the group appeared to be somewhat ad hoc. (Meaning that I think they filled a couple of gaps in their usual line up.) In particular the piano player didn't seem to be a jazz musician at all. During her rendition of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag", the group's leader commented to the coronet player that it was too slow...and it was a very mechanical performance...almost like a piano roll playing a player piano. Still a must do.

Located on alcohol-soaked St. Peter Street in the heart of the French Quarter, this is THE SPOT for true Dixieland Jazz. No bar, few seats (benches and floor make do). Preservation Hall has been serving up the best of old-style New Orleans Jazz for generations. Don't Miss It!
