I liked the cruise on a streetcar, and I liked the people watching, but the Garden District was lacking, well, pretty much everything I had anticipated. Plantation feel? Nope, you have to leave the city to see an actual plantation style house. Food? Nope, unless you came to New Orleans to eat at Popeyes, Wendy's or McDonalds. With the exception of a cute irish pub called Holy Ground I couldn't wait to get back to the French Quarter, where the real fun is... and I definitely DONT mean Bourbon Street!

For a different view of the city, be sure to take the St. Charles Streetcar Line out to the Garden District. Get the $3.00 pass so you can get on and off as many times as you want. Wander past beautiful houses and gardens from the mid-1800s. Head over to Magazine Street for antique shops, galleries, and restaurants. It's a great way to spend a day in New Orleans.

We went into the cemetery at the beginning of the garden district... we randomly bumped into Carla Bouillion who was giving a tour of the cemetery and joined the group...this tour was only for tips and I was so glad we did... She was a great guide, informative and knowledgeable and funny... She informed us that she was going to be giving a tour of the garden district if we wanted to go, that tour was $10.... we joined the second tour again the tour was enjoyable, we learned not just about the history of the houses but some stories of the owners, and Carla seemed to know a lot of the owners which was nice, also learned about the plants and such in the area. She was informative and entertaining. If you are in the area you should definitely take the tour with Carla... it will be fun!!!

Beautiful homes! Take a tour and learn about famous citizens who lived there in the past or who live there now. See houses that have been featured in movies or TV shows. Have lunch at the Commander Palace, you will not regret it.

We stopped by the Garden District Bookstore (in the Rink Shopping Center) to pick up a self tour book. It was a beautiful day and we loved walking the neighborhood and seeing the homes. You can also sign up for guided walking tours as well. There is an adjacent coffee shop that has excellent coffee and desserts.
