What a great surprise Indiana Dunes Beach! I live only about 3 hours away and didn't even realize that there was this wonderful beach available so close to home. The sand was soft and the water is clear and beautiful. You feel like you are at the ocean, but it's part of Lake Michigan. I hate that fact that I didn't find it before Labor Day. But since I know it's there now, I will definitely be back soon. The area surrounding the beach is just as beautiful. There are great hiking areas and camping available. Wonderful, wonderful place.

We enjoyed an hour strolling along the beach, wading in the water. We could see the Chicago skyline it was such a clear morning. It wasn't crowded at all when we got there but by the time we left the people were starting to roll in. We will be back again sometime when we can stay longer and do some hiking too.

Very nice National lakeshore park, well maintained. HAS lifeguards at the beach, unlike most of the beaches along Lake Michigan.

hiking three of the dunes park locations; west beach (the observation stairway), the riverwalk/ lighthouse beach area and the Tolleston dunes trail. The last two (and especially the last one) are not easy to find, but people seemed very happy to help with directions when the gps got confused :)
All are definitely worth the trip...beautiful vistas, on a clear day (ours was clear-ish) you can see Chicago across the lake.
Take bug spray and water for hiking -- and shoes that you can walk in sand in. There is a lot of uphill, but every climb is beautiful.
The beaches looked great but we didn't swim.
Stop at the visitor center first if you are new to the area....the Rangers are super helpful and you can get maps and your pass for the park if you need one.
The only extra fee was a parking fee at West Beach. Facilities are nice and clean.
We hope to go back...there is much to see and do.

This beach is very nice, clean and well-maintained. It is a very nice place to take a long walk and enjoy the outdoors. There are many lifeguards too. Great place to come to relax for some of the day.
