“A B&B getaway in Madison, WI”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

Inviting, comfortable, quite, homey, elegant, and friendly are words that come to mind when thinking of our stay at the Speckled Hen.

My wife and I came here for our anniversary and we were not disappointed with any aspect. Upon arrival we were met by the Inn Keeper, Pat who gave us a warm welcome and brief tour of the gust areas and our room. The guest area, or as they call it, the "gathering room" is very warm & inviting. Here you can sit to meet with others, read a book, select a wine, or enjoy complementary drinks such as coffee, tea or soda with some light snacks available as well. The freshly baked cookies are awesome. There is also a computer to use if you wish and there are several binders and folders with local attractions or restaurants to try out.

Our room, the "Madison Lakes" was outstanding. Large, and outfitted extremely well. You will not be disappointed. There is a king sized bed, a gas fireplace, nice sized TV, with good cable channels, or use of a DVD (you can borrow DVD's from the gathering room), free wifi, a small fridge, sink, and two comfortable chairs to melt into. The bathroom is ginormous, with a large whirlpool tub, a huge walk in shower complete with steam and rainfall shower head, all of it being very nice.

The grounds of the Inn is really a small farm, with fruits, veggies & fresh laid eggs that find their way into the ingredients for breakfast. Around the far there are several trails to use, winding you past the barn, sheep, a lama and various beds for wild flowers, herbs and vegetables.

As my wife and I walked the grounds and headed back to the Inn, we passed a good sized gazebo which seemed to beckon us in for a look. Inside there are a few comfortable chairs, wine cooler, a DVD player (with aux connections) and some wine glasses just waiting to be used. We sat in there for a while and we actually had plans on going out on the town. However, this entire scenery before us was extremely relaxing... the woods, birds singing, farm animals grazing about, all made for an extremely, wonderful relaxing environment we simply could not walk away from. So, we concluded our evening by enjoying ourselves in this tranquil environment accompanied with some wine. Ahhh... a very memorable time which we shall cherish for some time to come.

After a sound sleep and outstanding shower, we headed to breakfast where we dinned with two other couples who clearly were enjoying their stay as well. The breakfast freshly made by the Inn Keepers, Pat & Bob, is made up of several courses; fruit, scones, beacon and eggs, all of which was eaten with delight and a perfect ending chapter of our stay at the Speckled Hen Inn B&B.

The attention given by the Inn Keepers, Pat & Bob is perfect. They have really taken care of many of your needs in advance simply by setting up the Inn & Grounds really well. They are both attentive and engaging while at the same time not being overbearing. They really do have it well balanced!

Obviously, my wife & I will be checking back in here again. So, if you are looking for a place to get away from to unwind, (which is only a short drive from the Capitol Square) or in need of some quite time, then this is the place for you!

Thanks Speckled Hen, for such a relaxing time and creating some wonderful memories!!!

Wow, what a wonderful review! Makes me want to stay here! Seriously, we thank you for taking so much time to “paint the picture” of what it was like at the Speckled Hen Inn and to detail what you enjoyed. It is very helpful to our guests to have such a comprehensive description of what they might expect. We want guests to know what to expect and we plan to deliver on those expectations to the best of our ability. We are happy that you have “wonderful memories” of your anniversary stay with us and hope to see you again in future years. And also, thank you for the “balanced” comment…we do enjoy interacting with our guests, but we also respect your privacy.

My husband and I spent a lovely long weekend at the Speckled Hen Inn. The entire house is very clean, comfortable, and welcoming. The grounds are very well-kept. The gazebo was beautiful, and there are chairs all around the property to enjoy watching the animals or reading. Breakfast on both mornings was fresh, local, and delicious. We are looking forward to returning to spend more relaxing, eating well, and enjoying Madison!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Rising Sun room, and both the room and the bathroom were bigger than they look on t...

Thank you for spending the weekend with us. We all especially appreciated your comments concerning the “cleanliness” of the Inn and that the grounds “are well-kept”. It made everyone’s day. We did make a conscious effort to add more outdoor seating areas last year in an effort to allow guests to appreciate the beauty of the “estate”, and we are so glad you noticed and enjoyed them. I also passed on your compliments to the chef!

When we arrived for a one-night getaway, we found a professionally run operation with a cozy feel. The service was excellent, the process was smooth and the right details were taken care of all along the way. The location was ideal, far enough in the country to be restful and close enough to downtown Madison to get a vibe fix. The breakfast was scrumptious as was the company. It was an experience to remember. I would highly recommend it.

Thank you for the recommendation and for finding us “professionally run”. We try very hard to exceed our guest’s expectations. It is “in the details”. We hope to see you again in the future

My wife & I stay at the Speckled Hen at least a couple times a year. This year we met my sisterinlaw to celebrate her birthday and Mother's Day. Pat & Bob are really special and always make our stay enjoyable.

Thanks for coming to stay with us again. Madison is a “special place” in our opinion as well. Lots to do and see and it is just not hectic. I guess that is why it keeps getting rated as one of the best cities in America. Personally I am looking forward to getting the boat out to enjoy the lakes. Stay well and we hope to see you again.

It was my pleasure to spend two nights at the Speckled Hen Inn in Madison, WI. I was looking for a bucolic getaway from the hustle and bustle of living in Chicago. It was just what the doctor ordered: peaceful inn conveniently located with privacy, yummy breakfasts, accommodating hosts! In addition, there were sheep to gaze at from my windows and a vast library of gardening, cooking and Wisconsin history. I will absolutely return to this wonderful inn!

Room Tip: As a single, I was very happy with the Starkweather Room, but it could easily accommodate two person...

We stayed during the week at the Speckled Hen. Bob checked us in real quick because he was tapping his maple trees for sap. Everything about this place is great. It's quiet, welcoming, and has a feeling of home about it. Bob and Pat do a wonderful job of playing host while granting you the privacy you desire. Breakfast is my favorite part of the stay at the Speckled Hen; not only for the food but also for the conversation. Bob's fresh maple syrup was the star of the show. This is a great place to stay. Highly recommended.

Green Features: Bob and Pat use local ingredients as well as ingredients they harvest on their property.

Thank you for staying with us and for commenting on the correct mix of “privacy and interaction”. We do try to respect our guest’s privacy, since we recognize that you did not come here to become BFF’s with the Innkeepers. Obviously breakfast conversations are the exception! Maple Syrup season was really good this year…we got several gallons over the two week period and can now offer it at breakfast as a “really local” product!. Hope to see you again.

I have stayed at the Speckled Hen Inn many times and look forward to the next opportunity. It's so nice to know that when I am away for business I have a familiar, comfortable, safe place to stay. It is great for either working or retreat, and can be either social or very private. Bob and Pat are quite accomodating, and will be as involved in your stay as you desire. They reside in a separate home on the farm. If you miss out on breakfast you are missing a real treat. The food is outstanding. No detail is left unattended to.

It was good to see you again. As always, I enjoyed our "farming and sustainability" discussions.
This growing blueberry thing can not be as hard as it appears! Thanks for the comments from a business traveler prospective; staying at a B&B is a "relaxing way" to spend a "night on the road". Come back soon.
