“Amazing Stay with Bikes”
Reviewed October 3, 2010

The best service I ever had! Amazing rooms also come with free use of Trek bikes (owned by Trek) and iPads. We stayed for 3 days mid-week to celebrate our anniversary after my wife's friend was married in Madison. Every detail was perfect and Madison is great by bike. Save money and don't rent a car when the bikes are free and the trails are great! If I had to say anything negative, I would say the breakfasts are minimal but nice.

We stayed in room #1 at the ground floor and were absolutely charmed by the friendly helpful staff and the room's layout and old fashioned furniture. The bathroom was lovely too with a large shower with rainforest-ish head, and the bed was very comfy. Finished off with a continental breakfast on the terrace, wish our stay had been a bit longer frankly.

This Inn is just wonderful. Great rooms, great beds, wonderful ambience. Very European
breakfast, fabulous service, walking distance to everything, your own seating on the porch..Trek, the bicycle company now owns this property and did an outstanding job bringing the house back to it's original grandness.. Lucy ,one of the hosts, gave us all the pampering we could stand..thank you Lucy

My husband and I stayed at the Mansion Hill Inn on an overnight trip to Madison. We made a last minute decision to travel and were surprised to get a reservation. (We made the reservation on Wednesday for Friday night.)

The inn is nice and close to the downtown area and the capital building, so it is a great place to stay if you like to walk places instead of driving everywhere. Parking is limited, but the innkeeper will valet your car for you to a lot close by as well as bring your car back to the front of the inn when you need it. The inn is owned by the Trek bicycle company, so there are bikes available for the use of guests, something we will take advantage of on a future stay.

The innkeepers were very nice and accommodating. They were able to give recommendations on the restaurants I had researched. They have menus for many o fhte local restaurants available if you want to look at them, although I had already done that online so did not take advantage of that offer this time. They even provided us with an umbrella in case it rained while we were out walking around downtown. I know others have stated they would have liked front door keys, but it did not seem to be an issue to have to ring to get in. The innkeeper on staff arrived quickly.

We stayed in room 6 on the second floor. The room was fairly small, but it was impeccably clean. The bathroom was a good size and the shower itself was huge with two showerheads. The bed was very comfortable and the linens were great quality. After we arrived, on what had been a day of storms, a rainbow appeared outside our window, arching over the capital building. We would have liked to go out on the veranda to see it better, but the wet weather had caused the door to swell enough that it just wouldn’t budge.

Breakfast was continental style with some decent pastries from a local bakery as well as yogurt, granola, packaged oatmeal, and fresh fruit. The coffee was good and hot.

There were delicious chocolate chip cookies waiting for us by the bed in the evening after dinner. I would have loved more of those.

Things were little crazy in the area. Lots of vehicles and rented trucks were being loaded with furniture and some things were being abandoned at the curbs. We were told by a UW alumnus staying at the inn that August 15th is when all the apartments have to be vacated and the new renters move in on the 16th. Many of the homes near the inn are rented out to students, so avoid that time of year. We were also told by the alumnus that if you aren’t planning on going to a football game, avoid those weekends in Madison also.

Overall we had a nice experience. We will stay there in the future, but will try to plan further in advance so that we can reserve a larger room and choose out timing for the stay better. Madison is a great city and there is much more I would like to do in the area that we just couldn’t get done in 24 hours.

wu've been there for 3 nights, in room 7. the best ever, private balcony, hidden bathroom (behind a fake furniture). every night, back from restaurant, you find a fresh cooked cookie, with a little note. you can get bikes at the place to cross the city on its wonderful trails. breakfast is a bit deceiving, but everything else is perfect. employees are so helpful. really nice place in madison

My husband and I stay at the Mansion Hill Inn whenever we're in Madison visiting friends and family. We've stayed there both before and after the sale/renovation and I would have to disagree with the previous post. In my opinion, the updates to the rooms and bathrooms are a welcome change. This may be more an aesthetic issue than a quality issue for other visitors. The addition of the lobby bar is very nice, though one wonders how they can afford to maintain 24 hr staff for it in this economy. The one thing that we miss from the old owners is having our own front door key as is the case with most B&Bs. Again, this requires 24 hr staff to open the door for guests returning at any time of day or night. Aside from this minor inconvenience, we love the Mansion Hill Inn and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed here on our wedding night. Were I writing a review based on that experience, I would recommend this inn to you. But the inn was recently closed, sold, and then reopened under new management. They appear to have destroyed the character of the original inn, leaving the rooms without personality and without many of the amenities they once had. They did all that, and they raised the (already) overpriced room rates. Too bad.
