“Needs some updating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2006

The good: great downtown location, friendly staff
The bad: rooms need updating, paper thin walls

Overall, this isn't a bad place, it just needs some help. The location is great, right on the downtown square, across from the capitol building. You can't beat walking out the door on Saturday morning to explore Madison's famous farmer's market!

The staff is quite nice, and the complimentary valet parking was speedy. The valet parking staff also seemed to have no expectation of tips- I had to go out of my way to tip them.

But the rooms are in need of some attention- the superficial things are newer (wallpaper, bedspreads), but other things needed help. The bathroom has no ventilation fan, so there were mold spots on the ceiling. The tissue paper dispenser was rusty. The faucets took superhuman strength to turn off completely. The water temperature fluctuated wildly from almost scalding to freezing in a matter of seconds.

The walls could definitely use some soundproofing- I could clearly hear every word coming from my neighbor's tv- on both sides! Thankfully they went to sleep early and were quiet in the morning, or it could have been much worse. I highly recommend bringing earplugs, which made all the difference for me.

A couple strange things that were probably specific to my room- the smoke detector had a shower cap on it for several days. I thought it was intentional at first, but then thought better of it and removed it myself. Also, the alarm clock was broken and only played a hispanic music station at full volume- it can get you up in a hurry, though!

For a decent price (at least under $100), this hotel is probably worth staying at- for the location and friendly staff alone. Pay any more and you're not getting much of a deal.

The location of this hotel is awesome. It's smack-dab in the middle of downtown on the Capitol Square. The hotel itself is in need of some updates: the wallpaper is peeling in a few places; the lobby looks a bit dated; the linens aren't very high quality; and the bathrooms could use a new supply of grout and caulk. That being said, it's certainly not terrible. The room was clean enough, the staff was friendly, and as I mentioned, the location was perfect. There is a business center with free internet access and the cable TV lineup was impressive (for those who want a good selection after a long day). An Irish pub is less than a block away, State Street with its good ethnic restaurants and cute shops is just a few blocks away, and some impressive fine dining is to be had just on the other side of the state capitol building on Pinckney.

Bottom line: the owners should invest just a bit of money to cosmetically update. Visitors shouldn't expect "fancy" and they should be satisifed enough.

What a lovely place! Despite a slight mix-up regarding my booking as I couldn't get the room I actually reserved, my whole experience of the Inn on the Park couldn't be faulted. The room was comfortable (with possibly the comfiest bed on the planet and good AC) and spotless, all staff were incredibly polite and helpful and the hotel restaurant provided a decent range of tasty meals at a good price (try the Park Breakfast!!) when the heat made it preferable to stay indoors. Oh yeah, and room service is provided promptly and efficiently at no extra charge - it was a lovely treat to have breakfast in my pjs! It was also a refreshing (literally!) change to see vended goods being sold at a reasonable cost.

I didn't get the chance to use the leisure facilities so can't comment on these, but used the laundry service, free internet and complimentary airport shuttle with all being problem free. I can understand that some might not appreciate the slightly dated decor and architecture of the hotel but the location, service and price more than make up for that. Madison is a beautiful place, and the Inn on the Park not only puts you in the very centre of things (again, literally) but is within easy walking distance of all the sights. Also, a wide range of reasonably priced buses run close by (I had a room facing the Square, and therefore the buses, and didn't find the noise problematic) to take you to pretty much anywhere in the city so it's easy to get around without a car. I only wish I had a reason to go to Madison more often as I'd happily stay at this hotel again - can I please take it with me on my travels?!

My wife and I stayed a long weekend for the IM wisconsin 2005. The location was great for the IM venue only 2 blocks away. Dont expect anything fancy, the service was ample and the room was clean and decent size. The hotel itself could use remodeling, it is a bit worn, but it was a perfect location and very convenient for us that weekend. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is competing in Ironman Wisconsin.

I stayed at the Best Western Inn on the Park hotel for my son's graduation from the University of Wisconsin. I did not know what to expect as I have always stayed on the other side of town. The hotel was in a great location and the staff was very accomodating. The lobby area and rooms are very nicely decorated. It appears the restaurant was recently renovated. I accidently locked my keys in my car. The drivers went out of their way to make sure I made it to the ceremony and family events on-time. I will certainly stay here again when I return to Madison.

We were privileged to have a view of the Capitol building and Farmer's Market right outside our window. The downfall was that the public transport buses would keep their motors running during their layovers at the bus stop right below our window, which was extremely annoying, and quite a surprise that such a wasteful practice would be allowed in progressive Madison.

We enjoyed the opportunity to stay in a historical location. Staff was friendly and accommodating. I much enjoyed the clean, albeit dated, swimming pool. As parents of a future UW student (we hope), we look forward to staying at the same hotel on future visits to Madison.

Four of us stayed here New Years Eve. The woman that checked us in was very friendly and efficient, despite the fact that a lot was going on with a New Years Eve party that was planned there. Our room on the 7th floor had a decent view, and was quite clean. It didn't have any extra perks, but it was nice. The pool area seemed a little old, but large bright and clean. The hot tub located on the balcony area above the pool is rather small, but a good temperature and also clean. It's only large enough for two strangers or four friends tops. The best part about this place is you get great AAA rates and the location can't be beat.
