“Awesome custard!”

Michael's Frozen Custard
Ranked #14 of 27 Dessert in Madison
Restaurant details

Michael's is my favorite dessert-type stop in Madison. You see ice cream, gelato, sorbet, and frozen yogurt all over the place. But frozen custard is a superior breed of dairy goodness.

I never get tired of Michael's custard. They offer many mixes and flavors, and each one can quench your cravings. It's pricier than ice cream, but that's because, again, frozen custard is superior.

There were a number of flavors available during our visit. Messy if it's warm outside and the frozen custard is melting before you can eat it all, so get plenty of napkins. My favorite dessert place.

Folks in Wisconsin love their custard so when I saw the long line in front of Michael’s Frozen Custard on Monroe one evening, I had great expectations. I went the next day when the line was shorter but was disappointed. There were only three flavors available – chocolate, vanilla and the flavor of the day – mint chocolate chip. I tried the Turtle Sundae and found it too sweet for my taste and the salted pecan topping soggy. I tasted the orange float that another person in party had ordered and it was flavorful, but there wasn’t anything special about the custard itself. It tasted about the same as Dairy Queen or the frozen custard you can get out of frozen ice cream machines in all-you-can-eat buffets. The atmosphere is nice with a picket-fence surrounding picnic tables, and if you stroll a block behind Michael’s you’ll come to a lovely playground and park on the lake – a nice place to eat any ice cream.

This place has really good ice cream and the atmosphere of a wholesome, happy retro spot where you could go get ice cream on a family outing or a date with your sweetheart. They have non-sweet foods also, but I have no firsthand knowledge. The counter help is friendly and helpful. An upbeat and relaxing spot!

We've had better frozen custard in Illinois (Ollies in Sycamore) and Culver's is an accessible, quality product too. Michael's is solid, not exceptional.
