Great neighborhood gem with a spectacular view of the whole city. Food is great and servers have a wonderful laid back attitude.

“Ok service, Ok food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

We showed up on a sat evening so of course it's busy so we just decided to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table. Staff was being social with eachother or friends when they should have been taking care of other customers. Food was just ok. This was my fist time here so I will give it another try before I write it off. They must be doing something right because the place was pretty busy.

“Great local pub!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2013

We ate here on the recommendation of our hotel. We were not dissatisfied. The waitress was very knowledgable about the local beers and steered us to the right one for our entree. Lovely!

“Brew yes, pub yes, so stick to the pub food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013

Asking several hotel employees during the day where a group of us should eat, without fail, they mentioned the Great Dane; and without fail, started their discussion about the beer. Which, turned out to be right on the money. A block away from the state capitol, you would be inclined to enter the pool hall, but move over a bit and you can find the actual front door. A friendly server, knew her stuff when it came to the beers. I had the Devil's Red lager, which was good, though more creamy; and then tried the "Stone of Scone Scotch Ale," which I really liked. Three of the five our group were inticed to try the Guajillo beef brisket. It sounded good, maybe something like a fajita plate. The others had a reuben and the cod, which they liked; however, the beef was a disaster. The menu said beef atop a "johnny cake," which made us think cornbread or something, but it was a folded tortilla loaded with jalepenos. It was accompanied by sweet potato "tater tots." Just not very good -- maybe something a great dane would like. The place was busy, and the service was good, even though we got handed off to a trainee, Dan, who was very nice and attentive, in spite of his unhelpful "supervisor," tagging along. Have the beer, get a sandwich, and you will in good shape. Just don't go international -- they have Naan, tandoori, falafel, etc. I know Madison is a hip place, but a pub should stick to pub food.

“Good atmosphere, food and service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2013

Stopped in with old friends, on our first trip back to Madison in 10 years. My wife's food was tasty, while my meatloaf was moist but not very flavorful. Their beer was very good, and the service was attentive. However, they will not split a salad or entrée, which is well below the service level of most restaurants that we have eaten at in several states on our 7 week trip.
