Ok, it's a great place to be during the Farmer's Market in the summer or on the Wed. night Concert on the Square. The rest of the time it's just like any other big city with it's problems. We took the grandchildren to the Historical Museum and the Library. The one block walk between the two featured 35 homeless or cmi type people who were smoking, blocked our way and were scary. I want to say that they probably sleep at the Church around the corner at night and have nowhere to go during the day. It's filled with empty store fronts and litter. The Capitol is one block away and you would think the City of Madison would want to have a better impression and safer experience for visitors and residents who want to go there during the week.

“The hub of Madison”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

Ringed by delicious restaurant, the Capitol Square is a magnet for many visitors. It is fun to visit the state capitol. But the real draw for most are the activities that take place. The largest farmer's market in the Midwest takes place in growing season. And, during the height of the season, there are free classical music concerts. There are three excellent museums adjoining thre square: the Children's Museum, the Veterans' Museum, and the State Historical Society Museum. There are also many great places to eat!

“Fantastic”

The building is beautiful, and there is generally something fun going on outside such as a concert or an art fair. It's great for a nice walk at night, but wear a coat!

“Winterfest”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Kids enjoyed the free winterfest weekend activities like snow shoeing, cross country skiing, tubing, biking, and ice sculptures. Kids got olympic medals for trying activities. Great sponsorship lead to a fun weekend getaway. Recommend you check out next winter as we will return to do it again. Weather was too cold to do the 5k run for the kids but maybe next year.

“A Beautiful Capitol Building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2014

This is one of the nicer state capitol buildings I have visited. The exterior is a classic style in the sense that it resembles the nation's capitol. But the architecture is not all there is to admire as the interior is quite lovely and features intricate stylistic nuances that are worth taking the time to appreciate. To do this, the guided tours are quite useful. I can honestly say that, of the state capitols in which I have taken tours (20 or 25), this was one of the best. The guide was thorough and gave some wonderful interpretations pointing out some very interesting facts. I would highly recommend taking the time to see this place. It's lovely setting in downtown Madison is just that much more of a draw.
