Our family visited Madison this weekend and have an aspiring Geologist (our 11 year old daughter) in our family. So we stopped by the University of WI Geology Museum. It has a nice collection for the size, great stories accompanying many of the exhibits, and the price is right. It was a great visit and I'm glad we stopped.

This is not that large of a museum, but what is there is very interesting. There were several school field trips going on when we were there, but that did not impose on our visit. There was one rock display I found really interesting.

Visited this free university museum with spouse and 11 year old son. Wonderful collections are well-displayed. Beautiful and interesting rocks and minerals not only from WI but also from all over the world. A fluorescent display enlightens the budding geologist and provides more beauty for those just looking. The exhibit on meteorites was very interesting. The collection of fossils and dinosaur bones as well as a viewing window to watch fossil specimens being prepared was an unexpected treat for a free museum.

A mile of shopping and food and characters, as a resident since 1987, I consider it one of the very essences of Madison, and if you have the time, Start at the Great Dane Pub and Brewery for lunch, walk down State Street, and by late afternoon, wind up on the Memorial Union terrace for an ice cream or a beer and watch the sunset on Lake Mendota. Aaaaah, that's nice to just think about.

While this museum is small, it has a lot for young kids to see. My girls (3 & 7) really enjoyed seeing the different dinosaur bones, rocks, and information about Wisconsin.
