We enjoy going to state capitol buildings and this is definitely among the "must see" group! The security people were very friendly and helpful as were the people at the reception area and the guide in the museum area where you go to get to the observation deck. We didn't take the guided tour, but picked up the tour information form the reception area. We were advised to take the brochure that shows fossils in the natural stone in the capitol building--very cool! The best for us is a fossilized starfish on one of the north stairs going up from the second floor. The view from the observation deck is fantastic. You can see both lakes (Mendota and Monona) and get a great overview of the city. We learned the dome is the 4th largest in the world and the largest in the Americas. The museum has some interesting history and lots of historical photos and artifacts. Everyone we ran into who worked there gave us more interesting information and pointed out more for us to see. The interior has some beautiful murals and stonework. It is a grand and beautiful building. The grounds are nice as well.
