I have been to about 10 capitol buildings in the country, and this one is the best by far! The size and scale of the capitol is amazing. The care and workmanship put in to the choice of stone, paintings, etc, is evident. We had a wonderful tour guide who was very informative and answered all of our questions. I also enjoyed the fossils in some of the stone work. I plan to go back again!

“Absolutely Beautiful”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

We just wondered in to take a peek and I'm so glad we did. What a beautiful building! We didn't have a lot of time to explore, but it is worth whatever time you can spend, and I plan to go back for a more extensive look around the next time I am in Madison.

“A must see”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

Very cool place to see. The building was like a maze when we went inside to look for the restroom. Once we found the middle underneath the dome we found the best part. Take a look up.
Definitely go to the observation deck to look out at the city from the top. We didn't take a tour but felt we didn't need to.

“Free, interesting & worth it”
Reviewed August 14, 2013 via mobile

We took a tour of the Capitol. Our tour guide was very interesting. She explained things for young kids through adults. She had some interesting stories-especially in the assembly room-badger/soldier. We went up 2 the observation deck & that had a wonderful view of the city. We parked on the street & had a little trouble finding a space but other than that…well worth the trip.

“Wisonsin's State Capitol is capital but parking is tough”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

By all means visit the Capitol building in Madison, Wisconsin and take the free tour. Our guide was informative, very easy to hear, had a great way with kids and kept things moving. Never saw a yawn in the crowd. There are a lot of steps but elevators for those with mobility issues. The architecture with its many kinds of marble and granite, gold leaf everywhere, stained glass skylights throughout, and outstanding art in all the important rooms are a feast for the eyes. Be sure to go to the observation level to get a good view of the city.

The only reason the rating is four instead of five is because metered parking around the Capitol building is limited to 20 minutes which is tough when the tour takes about an hour. One of our group stayed with the vehicle so that he could keep feeding the meter. I don't know if there is any longer term parking nearby but it would be worth looking for. There are many restaurants, shops, activities and easy walking in the area.
