While we enjoyed visiting the home, and enjoyed the views and learning about the history/construction/etc. of the home, we were fairly underwhelmed. Probably not the highlight of anyone's trip. If you have NOTHING to do and would like a nice view of the lake then by all means go ahead, but its not worth going too far out of your way for.

We went for the Christmas tour and it was lovely. The staircase is magnificent as you enter and the rooms look out on Lake Mendota. The decor is historical as it should be.

By architect Riley back in the early 1900's, this is a beauty. His work also shows up at the Historical Society with original drawings and other files from his personal collection. This was an age of servants and craftsmanship where the houses took years to build. See history if you like this sort of thing.

The governor's mansion opens for public tours on Thursday afternoons. There is no admission charge, but they ask you to contribute a children's book, if possible. You tour about 5 rooms on the main floor and then can go out in the gardens and enjoy the view of Lake Mendota. Tour guides give a lecture about each room. Not the most all-encompassing house tour we've ever taken, but worth it if you are a fan of grand old houses.
