“Probably the best hotel in Madison”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2009

It would seem that those seeking an upscale hotel in Madison essentially have two choices--the Hilton and the Madison Concourse Hotel and Governors Club.

While I didn't see the rooms at the Concourse, the conference I was attending was located there--and I was not very impressed with the public spaces and conference rooms. The Concourse gave off a 70s vibe, whereas the Hilton was classy and modern.

The Hilton is located right across from the Capitol in a rather nice setting. The facility itself is attractive and perhaps a little more interested than your standard Hilton because it is integrated into an older building.

I was given a corner king executive room which was quite roomy. The room quality was fairly high--furniture was in good shape, bed was quite comfortable. LCD Tv, but cable was not HD which makes it rather a waste.

Though well appointed, the bathroom was quite small. A bit out of place given the size of the room.

I was given access to the Exec lounge even though I'm only Diamond--nice setting, pretty standard continental spread.

The front desk staff is worth commenting on because they were unusually friendly and helpful. I wasn't expecting that given the previous reviews, but I can only report what I experienced--everybody was uniformly nice.

I ordered room service once--overpriced, of course, but the food quality was actually very good. Of particular note was a way-above average clam chowder. It was also prompt, and once again delivered with a smile.

Parking situation is a bit confusing because the self park option is on again/off again, depending on events at Monona Terrace and the attached restaurant. Valet is always available.

Overall, my experience at this hotel was pleasant, and I'm fairly certain its the best that Madison has to offer.

1. The room stunk - literally, something or things in the room smelled like a wet dog.
2. Rainy day w/ not much to choose from on tele (20 or so channels) - but of course I could watch all of the "Fox "News" that I wanted.
3. Loud, I could hear every move and voice coming from the adjacent room in the morning.
4. doesn't include internet service w/ the already overpriced room.
5. doesn't include parking w/ the already overpriced room.
6. great location w/ a good view.

We stayed here homecoming weekend and found the Hilton was an excellent choice for us. Just a couple of blocks off Capitol Square with views of the Capitol or Lake Monona. Our room was spacious, tastefully designed, clean. Bed was comfortable and bed linen first class. Excellent bathroom with top of the line amenities. Entire staff was helpful and friendly. The steakhouse looked wonderful. I wish that we hadn't made other plans for dinner. Only dissapointment was breakfast. Long wait for our breakfast which we ordered off the menu because the buffet did not look very appealing. Nevertheless, we'll go back.

This is definitely not a bad place to stay. The rooms are nice and big with comfortable beds. Lots of pillows, lots of towels... Some rooms have great views of the capital. And, the rooms are very clean.

On the downside, the lighting in both the rooms and in the bathrooms is horrible! It was virtually impossible when I was trying to find an eyelash that had gotten into my eye. Even though they put in an additional magnifying mirror, they failed to install one with a light - - - so virtually useless.

My next comment may be a problem in all of Madison but because I've never stayed anywhere else, I don't know. It was very difficult to get the soap off in the shower. That was partly due to only mediocre water pressure, but it was also due to the water itself. (I can't remember - is it hard water or soft water?) Whichever - they could use better showerheads so that the water pressure would be better.

Oh - and one final comment. The wireless access is $10 a day. Obviously, I prefer the places that provide that for free.

Stayed at the Hilton for a conference held at the Monona Terrace Conference Center. Had a wonderful view of the capitol buidling. The room was very roomy and clean. The staff was very helpful and I did not have any issues. The conference center was fantastic. The main are was right on the lake and offered wonderful views. The hotel is minutes from lots of restaurants and UW-Madison. If you are there on a Wednesday or Saturday, do not miss the farmers market. It has wonderful cheeses, fruit, veggie, flowers, pastries, etc., all from locals.

All went well for the most part. Very clean, nice rooms. Very nice lounge off the check in area. Great restaurant onsite too. 2 things though. $229 on a Sat. For this money I did not get a parking spot, the sign said lot full! I was told to park down the block at another lot...not good. Secondly, the staff is not as attentive or friendly as their other property, Doublteree....they should send them over for training there.

We went up for a weekend at the Great Taste of the Midwest Beer Festival. The Hilton was a little bit more expensive than other hotels, but we reserved a corner room with a view over the lake, and it was beautiful. Our room was ready for us to check in by noon, and the front desk staff was extremely helpful with questions about Madison, how to get around, etc. We were a 3 minute walk to capitol square with Madison's amazing Saturday morning farmer's market as well as some top notch restaurants and bars.

Our room was very nice, with a large comfortable bed, plenty of big towels, and Crabtree and Evelyn bathroom amenities. It was very clean, as well.

Overall, we would definitely stay here again.
