“Friendly, clean and convenient”
Reviewed December 10, 2010

Had a corner room on the 8th floor, nice clean spacious room, although I'll agree with the other reviewer about the bathroom door being a tight fit. You had to step all the way in and around in order to close the door. It's minor. Shower was huge and clean. Bed was great, lots of pillows. It snowed while we were there and the noise from the plows on the street was obvious; yelling as well at times, but it is a college town. Staff was extremely friendly, although room service knocked despite the do not disturb sign (in their defense, it WAS late). I hate having to pay for parking, but at least it was covered and only $10 a night.

This property just opened in April/2010. Good location, clean, close to state street. the rooms have a great layout and there's a free shuttle to take you around town. I plan on staying here again next time I go to Madison.

This is a very contemporary, clean hotel. I called and asked for a corner room, as I heard they had some of these on the Washington Ave. side. My request was honored and I had a 9th floor room. I had good view, and could see a small part of the Capitol. The hotel is about a 3 block walk from the Capitol Square. Parking is only $10 a night, which I think is reasonable.

The Grand Hyatt bed was comfortable and the linens were soft. The 42" HD TV is nice. The walk-in shower was HUGE. Only reason Sleep quality received 3/5 is that sometimes street noise was a bit loud, but not too many of the rooms face right on the street, so it's not likely to be an issue for everyone.

The fitness center is very nice, as all equipment has private TV/radio/iPod plug ins. It is cool that once you plug your iPod in, you can control it on a touchscreen on the machine.

Only downside is that the "business center" are two computers open to the lobby. It doesn't feel very private to be sitting at a computer and have people walking behind you, etc.

To be honest, I have never heard of Hyatt Place before but was booked at this hotel for business travel. The hotel was clean and comtempory. The rooms were big with a huge flat screen tv. The room offer a sectional couch that could be used for a work area in addition to a great desk. Wifi access was easy and high speed. The lobby offered a cafe for not only breakfast but late into the night snacks and drinks.

The location was within walking distance to the Capital and University of Wisconsin campus.

The hotel is new. The rooms are clean and roomy. They have a big screen TV, refrigerator and lot of room. Breakfast is included with the room. You can also purchase snacks during the day from the front desk area including pizza, beer and wine, soups and sandwiches.

The front desk staff at this hotel was very helpful and responsive. The place has a lot of potential, and would probably usually receive 4 stars from me. However, there were a few glitches during our visit, which is why I am giving it 3.

The hotel is in a very convenient location. It is more expensive than many of the hotels in Madison, but it's definitely worth it to pay to be near downtown and the University. Most of Madison's hotels are located way out in strip mall heck. This place is only a couple of blocks from the Capitol building. It is a bit further to the University, but you can take a pleasant walk down State St. to get there or ask for a shuttle ride.

We arrived late with sleepy kids, and the staff was accomodating and quickly got us up to our room. They also kept the food stocked during very busy breakfast times and were sure to greet you every time you walked in the door.

The lobby is roomy and comfortable. There are a couple of TVs, but there are also sections of the lobby where you can totally escape those TVs. We had friends from Minnesota meet us at the hotel, and we spent several hours sitting in the lobby catching up on things. It was extremely hot during our stay, and the staff surprised us by bringing us all ice water, even though they knew our friends weren't guests. We also saw folks playing chess and Scrabble in the lobby in the evening.

The rooms were spacious with a comfortable sitting area with a couch and mini-frig. The beds were luxurious with great mattresses and lots of fluffy bedding. The one odd thing was that you had to have both lights by the beds either on or off. This was annoying to the young folks who wanted to get to sleep. If we could have left just one light on it would have been better.

Now for the problems. We stayed in the hotel for 4 nights, but our room was only made up once. The first day they missed cleaning our room, they left us a pile of towels and a note of apology, but then they missed two other days as well. We did leave the room after the cleaning people had started on our end of the hall, but we were out by 10:30 am. We saw cleaning folks around well after that hour, so I'm not sure why they never circled back and made up our rooms. We are late risers, but I've never had this happen at another hotel.

The second thing was that we were interuppted twice by a maintenance person because water was dripping in the meeting room on the floor below our room. The man was polite, and, of course, they need to find the cause of the leak, but in both cases, we had not begun to take showers, so there was no way the leak was coming from a misplaced shower curtain. This incident makes me wonder if this is one of those new buildings that looks nice when first erected, but is actually somewhat shoddily made and quickly has problems.

The final strange thing was that there was no hotel info in the room. No listing of cable channels, no folder with a map of the hotel and listing of amenitites, no list of local restaurants and churches, not even a list of phone extensions for hotel staff and front desk. I thought the staff had told us something about getting snacks through a modified room service, but I'm not sure if I was correct since nothing in the room stated this, and I was too tired to investigate. Also, the hours for breakfast differ on weekdays and weekends, but this isn't posted anywhere. On Monday morning I saw several people diappointed when they came down and discovered that they had missed breakfast because it closes earlier on weekdays. Better signage on info in the room might have alleviated this.

Needed to be in Madison for a family medical emergency. Was greeted warmly and with concern by helpful staff. Umberto and Tamika were incredible. Hospitality, friendliness, and a beautiful new hotel makes this place a winner!! Room set up was fantastic, comfortable bed, nice sitting area. Close to the Capitol, attached covered parking, and amenities galore make this a top pick for us!!
