“Good food, great service and outstanding brew”
Reviewed December 23, 2011

I spent an evening here with local friends while in Madison on business recently and was not disappointed. The food menu was limited but, surprisingly good after reading other reviews and adjusting my expectations downward. The atmosphere was nice and cozy and our server was professional, friendly, attentive, and efficient. Prices were reasonable, even cheap by the standards of many brewpubs I've visited around the country. Most importantly, their brews were really delicious, high quality, and interesting. I enjoyed the pale ale and the Imperial IPA "Satisfaction Jackson," in fact, this was a really delicious take on the style, my current favorite craft beer style that isn't often available on draft at your average brewpub. I'm glad I stopped at Ale Asylum and will return next time I'm in Madison.

“Tours very limited”
Reviewed December 16, 2011

Went on a Saturday evening and found out tours were already filled. They only take about 15 people per tour and have limited tour times, so must show up very early to wait if you want to get in on the tour. Sat at the bar and had some beers. All were great. Hopalicious was tasty but not as hoppy as I was expecting. Some of the better beers I've had at a microbrewery overall, though.

“Only good if you can't find anywhere else to eat.”
Reviewed October 10, 2011

The Beer was good, but the food was a frozen pizza. The service was bad. The wait staff was more interested in drinking shots with their friends than checking on customers. The frozen pizza was forgotten in the oven and was very crispy. Wonder how they handle a large crowd?!?

“Good beer, limited food menu”
Reviewed September 3, 2011

Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. Tried their beer sampler....and liked all but one. The food menu is very limited since there is no onsite kitchen. We ordered cheese sticks and thought it would be like a fried cheese stick, but instead it was a cheese pizza. The service was good. The atmosphere was simple, but nice.

“Great locally-brewed beer, hop vine-covered beer garden, decent food”
Reviewed August 31, 2011

This is a nice local brew pub on the east side of Madison and was apparently founded by the former brewmaster of the now defunct Angelic Brewery. The beer is excellent and if it's your first time I'd recommend ordering the sampler which is usually 9-10 beers (some change out, others are seasonal). The beer styles run from a golden ale to dark stout to hefe-weizen and present the customer with a wide range of choices. My personal favorites are the Hopalicious American Pale Ale and the Madtown Nutbrown Ale although I like virtually all of their beers.

The food is decent but not the greatest I've had, although the pizzas are very good. The servers are on par and the restaurant itself is colorful, with the bar area having a high ceiling, reminiscent of beer halls in Germany in some ways, and there is a nice little beer garden outside with hops growing over the fences. You can also buy six-packs of beer at the bar if you find one you want to take home and aren't sure what stores carry it (though many likely do).

Overall, it's a great place to stop for a drink and to sit and unwind if you're on the east side.
