Baymont Inn & Suites Cortez

Stayed here over the weekend as most do when visiting Mesa Verde. Picked Baymont based on reviews. Wasn't disappointed.

Pro's
- comfortable bed!
- clean room
- bath towels either new or really good quality (wish at home ones were as nice)
- free breakfast
- nice outside patio
- 12noon checkout

Con's
- doors to some rooms face outside (could be bad for some) but access is via inside stairwell
- didn't see coffee maker in room (but there is free coffee in lobby and a buffet in the AM).

Were I to return to Cortez I would not hesitate staying here again. Very nice experience.

Although we stayed only one night, we found the Baymont Inn a great place to stay was well as a good value. Our room was on the south side to the building with an outstanding view of the mountains. We were part of a small group that flew into the Cortez airport and we needed a place to stow our gear while visiting Mesa Verde NP and the desk people provided that service for use.

We came into Cortez, Co for a wedding that had a discounted rate available to us. This is the MAIN reason we stayed at the Baymont Inn & Suites. We left very late the night we needed to check-in and called the hotel ahead of time, letting them know it would be about 2:30am before we arrived. They didn't ask for our room number...name...nothing and said, "Okay, no problem. We GAURANTEE late checkin". Alright, great.
We get to Cortez about 2:30a/3a and check-in to our room, drive around to our room and start unloading the bags.
One of our female friends goes ahead to put the bags in the room first and she comes back in utter shock. There are shoes on the floor, the TV is on and there is a half naked male biker on one of the beds in the room.

Awesome.

Now the current time is 3:30am---we go back to the front desk and say that there's someone in the room you gave us keys to. The Night Auditor who was working (I think his name is Jason), says, "Huh?" Then he proceeds to call the guest in the room at 3:30am and ask why he is in our room. Really? You're going to wake up the guest that is in that room to ask them why??
We learn that he was moved to our room earlier that day for some reason and it was never input into the system. Fine.Move us into another room.
He proceeds to ask, "Do you really need 2 beds?"
YES---there are 4 of us in the room and we booked a LONG time ago and you gauranteed us the bed type because we were with a wedding block.
He says, "Well, there are no rooms available." Really???? It's now almost 4am and you don't have any rooms left when you gauranteed us a late check-in.
Finally, (after some pushing) he goes to check the rooms that are marked "dirty" in the system...Hell, they moved a guy into our room without inputting it into the system, they might have some "dirty" rooms that are actually clean.
20 MORE minutes later...we get keys to the room. WHAT A CLUSTER.

Working in the Hotel business myself...this WHOLE situation didn't make sense. Why would you not input moving a PERSON into another room and why wouldn't you make sure your guests that had booked a long time ago are taken care of when you GAURANTEE they can check in late because with the Baymont, obviously you cannot.
Some other disappointing notes:
--The room only comes with shampoo, NOT conditioner. We asked the housekeeper for some but she said we had to go to the front desk to get it. Huh?
--The room had a King size bed and a Full size bed as their "2bed room". Be nice if they would specify that ahead of time.
--The door had screwdriver marks on the frame and the paint peeled back by the latch where someone had previously tried to break in. Comforting.
--The Night Auditor was extremely inattentive and reluctant to help. I understand it's late but honestly, IT'S YOUR JOB.
--The Front Desk staff came up to our room to ask us to check out...on the wrong day. We weren't actually checking out for another day.
--When we went to check out, the Front Desk thought we were checking out the next day, past our actual check out date that we specified the day before.
--We talked to the manager about the horrible experience and they said they'd give us $40 off the room EACH day, when in fact we only received $40 off the first day.
The service at this hotel (at least in the Front Office) is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. It's like they don't even communicate between each other.
I personally, work in reservations for 4 large resorts and I understand that miscommunications happen but really? There needs to be at least some notes written on the reservation and some rectifying of the situation done but nothing was even attempted until we had to go to the manager directly.
This was my first time to Cortez and when/if I'm back, I will not be staying here.

Room Tip: High floors in the back have AMAZING views of the prairie and mountains behind the town of Cortez.

The room was average, it was clean. The breakfast was good.
The wifi was another story… It was so slow that Dial up would have been quicker. There was no way you could do any work from the room. Talked to the front desk and he said he knows it is slow.

We found the Baymont when searching for a pet friendly hotel. The room was very clean and roomy. We had a great breakfast--beyond what we expected for a "free" breakfast. The staff was very helpful and directed us to a large area where we could exercise our dogs. We will stay again if in the area.

It's Cortez, CO, so the choices are limited. I travel a lot - and knowing it's a small town means not expecting updates, luxury or amenities. (I chose to stay here as I was traveling with dogs and the reviews were acceptable.) But there are some things that are a non-negotiable - such as cleanliness. At first glance the room seems adequate for its location and price. However chairs were sticky (both in the room and in the dining area), a peanut or two was still on the floor, and the bathroom door has likely never been washed, to name a few. Other problems with the room: the mattress has probably never been rotated as evidenced by the very prominent valley in the middle, there appears to be mold growing on the bathroom ceiling, lack of a sheer curtain for the window (only the heavy drape meaning either no light or everyone walking by can see in), and the walls are very thin.

The breakfast was a glorified continental and fine for a quick bite before deciding where to eat.

Dogs are allowed and there is plenty of grassy area. Wifi is free.

Probably the best quality/price ratio of all hotels i used in my 4400km tour (20 nights) of the 4 corners region in USA. Best breakfast and lot of space and tables for it. Nice pool. I will look for Baymont brand next time i will go for business or vacation.
