We stayed at the White Eagle on our way to Mesa Verde. Cortez is not the nicest of towns, and this motel was located on the far southwest edge. There were several other mom and pop places sprinkled nearby, with most of the chain motels located on the opposite end of Cortez, closer to the entrance of Mesa Verde. The owners of the White Eagle are extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and had everything we needed. The motel's location and lack of curb appeal are its biggest drawbacks. The old motel sign (with previous name) still stands not far from the new sign. The grassy area out front has a pool...with no water. An old, defunct putt-putt golf area was located outside our window and was an eyesore. The White Eagle Inn was not the picturesque, quaint charmer we envisioned. It met our basic needs, yet I am not sure we would stay here again.
