“Simple, clean, no curb appeal”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We stayed at the White Eagle on our way to Mesa Verde. Cortez is not the nicest of towns, and this motel was located on the far southwest edge. There were several other mom and pop places sprinkled nearby, with most of the chain motels located on the opposite end of Cortez, closer to the entrance of Mesa Verde. The owners of the White Eagle are extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and had everything we needed. The motel's location and lack of curb appeal are its biggest drawbacks. The old motel sign (with previous name) still stands not far from the new sign. The grassy area out front has a pool...with no water. An old, defunct putt-putt golf area was located outside our window and was an eyesore. The White Eagle Inn was not the picturesque, quaint charmer we envisioned. It met our basic needs, yet I am not sure we would stay here again.

The White Eagle Inn in Cortez, Colorado is a “refurbished” sixties-style hotel. Staying there is a lot like driving around in a cherry 1968 Camaro convertible in many ways. First off, you’d absolutely love to go cruising in that car with the top down and the engine roaring. Drive it for a few days, though, and you’d start to notice the lack of air conditioning, power steering, satellite radio and the 12 mpg.

We thoroughly enjoyed our night there. The staff was very pleasant and the view of the mountains behind the motel is fabulous. They’re designer colors: evergreen with a horizontal ecru stripe near the top. The room had everything we needed except an iron and board, but the staff brought one over the minute we asked.

Even after one day, though, you notice that the bathroom is lit by a single bulb in a sixties-era glass fixture over the mirror. The air conditioning unit is effective but loud. The TV is an analog job, enormous by today’s standards, and it sticks out from the wall at least three feet. I was scared to death I’d get up in the night and crash my head into it.

In other words, there are good reasons today’s hotel rooms are very different from those in 1960.

Still, if you’re in Cortez, you’re likely there to visit Mesa Verde. The alternatives in a small town like this are chains like Holiday Inn Express. If you’re only staying a night or two, it can be fun to spend them in 1964.

This hotel located just outside of town, but it was good for the price. It is an older hotel, but it is very clean, which made it good for two nights at Mesa verde. It's not fancy, does not have breakfast but it does have a fridge and Internet. Unless you are the kind of person who spends a lot of time at a hotel, this place is good value, clean ,and functional. I would certainly stay here again, and I recommend it. The front desk staff was very friendly too.

We arrived earlier than the check in time and the owner was very obliging and let us into the room.
The check in was efficient, fast and efficient.
The room was compact ( would make a good setting for a 60's movie) but adequate and a little old fashioned but kind of had a charm to it.
There was everything that we needed in the room for a one night stop and there was a microwave, just outside the room for people to share.
The room was squeaky clean as was the bathroom.
It is always good to stay at local family owned places.
The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well.
We did miss a swimming pool though.
We would definitely recommend this Inn for a short stay.

we stayed here last week while on a motorcycle trip. the owners are very friendly, the rooms super clean, carpet new, etc. the price is just right and the location is adequate. right off the main highway. we had no trouble with the noise. one thing i wish they would do is open the swimming pool! they just have it fenced off and it would have been great to take a dip after motorcycling all day.

We found the White Eagle Inn and refreshing break from the traditional chain motel. The room was not as spacious as larger motel chains, but it was charming nonetheless. Everything was clean and the location was convenient, even though it is south of the main part of town. The view out the back is absolutely stunning as the sun sets: the sun lights up the entire range of the Mesa Verde in the evening.

The best part, for us, was the simple family welcome that gave the place personality. I remember motels like this when I was a child. While we do enjoy the availability and consistency of the larger chains, sometimes that "down home" touch is just what we need.

Room Tip: If you are headed to the Four Corners area, this motel is right on the way. I believe they also off...

We found this motel quite late in the day and thankfully they still had rooms available. The lady who checked us in was very helpful, even giving us guidance on booking ahead for our next nights stop. The room was clean, the location was quiet, the service was great and the pice was a bargain, a great budget place to stay.
