The Luotong Night Market in Yilan is probably the second largest night market in Taiwan after the Taipei Shilin Night Market. However, I find the quality of the stores and food noticeably better than that at Shilin. It is about 1.5 hours by car from Taipei city. There shall be at least over 100 stores there and it is always packed both on week days and weekend. So be prepared to queue for the popular stores during peak hours from 7-9pm. The deep fried chicken here is at least 2 notches better than the famous Hot Star large fried chicken in Shilin. The most popular stone is the 阿灶伯当归羊肉汤 (Ah Zao Mutton Soup) which had the longest queue and people seems don't mind the 1 hour wait. Some other interesting one is the spring roll store which make their wrapping skin fresh on the spot. It is worthy for a trip if you are in Taipei or nearby vicinity.

This night market is just next to the hotel I am staying (Kapok), so it's just a minute walk to it.
It seemed to have more stalls selling food than products. There's a few stalls which has very long queue, I tried them & felt that the food are not fantastic to be in the queue for quite a few minutes. I ate the big chicken cutlet (not tat nice), fried pork pieces, spring onion roll, & spring onion bun.
I dislike tat cars & motorcycles squeezing through the busy lanes.

We went on a Saturday night. At about 630pm, it was already super crowded!!! The queue for the 葱油饼 was ridiculous!!!! Super duper long!! So we didn't try it :( another famous delicacy here is the 龙凤卷 which is supposed to be a deep fried pork? On a stick. I think it's pork. That's what the minsu owner told us.
From the main entrance of the night market, where the ice cream popiah is, walk along the night market. Until you come to a stall selling hot plate beef with noodles that look like udon. Remember it's the 1st stall You'll come across! The beef and udon like noodles is so so so tasty! The drinks are free :) just help yourself to it. There will be another stall down the same stretch but in out opinion, more people frequent this stall and their plates are always wiped clean!!! It was so good... Another thing to try is the ice cream popiah. You'll need to google to find the original stall. It's very unique and taste great! There are 2 similar stalls side by side so don't eat from the wrong stall!
We tried a bunch of other stuff, grilled corn, black pig sausage, weird tofu with some special topping... All not so nice. You may try it at your own risk. But the hot plate beef and ice cream are a MUST try. And these 2 stalls barely have a queue :)

Many kind of food is sold like spring onion deep fried(Sanxing cong cian bing), Cake residue (gaozha) , peanut icecream roll (huasheng Juan bingqilin) and kumquat juice etc. You can enjoy eating and shopping.

There aren't many things to do at night but to take a walk and sample local snacks in the night market. After our first night market at Shilin, we are more aware what ticks and what doesn't for a family with very young children. Firstly, be prepared to walk and eat at the same time because there are not many sit- down dining options, so this is bad for us. We are not used to carrying and eating hot food without cutlery. Finally we managed to find a stall that offers sit-down dining but it was so crowded and we were seated very near to the passing traffic. Though the oyster omelette and meat ball soup tasted fantastic and are value for money, we did not feel comfortable and safe due to the passing traffic and hovering crowd waiting for your seats.
