The abundant rainfall in Yilan permeates through limestone stratum and the plate tectonic movement releases carbon dioxide that mixes with the water and becomes gassy carbonic acid water. This explains how a cold spring is formed. When you walk into the cold spring you might feel a chill, but your body will get hotter later on. And, it’s fun to see gassy bubbles covering your entire body. Reputedly, by bathing in it, cold springs cure skin diseases while drinking spring water cures gastrointestinal problems.

“Run Down Cold Spring”
Reviewed August 29, 2011

We took a train from Yilan station (near est station to our hotel) to Suao Station. The train ride was about 40 mins. From Suao station, walk out to the main road and turn left. There is a side road on the opposite side of the road. Cross over and you should be able to see the Suao Cold Spring plaque. There are 2 types of fees available –communal pool and private baths. We paid TWD70 per person for the communal pool. Sorry, cannot remember the fee for private baths.

After a short walk towards the communal pool area, we were rather disappointed with what we saw. The entire place looked run down and badly in need of an upgrade. There were about 20 portable changing/shower cubicles lined along the way to the pool. As these are placed out in the open, don’t expect much privacy. Toilets are located near to the entrance.

Things that you must bring:-
1. Whatever you need for a shower eg shampoo, body foam, towel, etc
2. Get ready TWD 30 which is the cost of a locker.

Remember to take note of the time for the train to your next destination after the cold spring as the wait can be as long as 60 minutes.

Although this place was not well maintained, we enjoyed soaking in the cold water for about an hour. Once you are in the water, you forget the ugly sight of the place.
