This wasn’t our first choice but the better rated places get booked up fast as there are a lot of tour groups passing through here. For one night I found the ridiculously old fashioned ambience here was part of the fun of coming up to Nuwara Eliya, but I wouldn’t have wanted to stay longer.

Everything feels old and really a little unloved. The books in the bookcase in the sitting room are numbered as if you may steal one, but some are so dog eared they look totally unreadable! We got upgraded to a ‘suite’ which had a separate lounge with TV, decorated in a mismatched more modern style. The bathroom is badly designed with towels inside the shower but nowhere to hang one in the main area.

There’s a characterful snooker room but very disappointingly they charge to play and have unfriendly signs saying ‘no beginners’ and a big fine for ripping the cloth, so they really don’t want you to use it!

Food was average at best, just a big buffet in the main restaurant with swarms of mainly Chinese groups descending on it. As in other places, we found that they aren’t good at keeping food hot enough so a lot is tepid, also an issue at breakfast. Try the spectacularly bitter green juice that’s allegedly very good for you if you dare. Bet you can’t drink a whole glass!

Note there’s a big building project behind the hotel on the right side with work into the night and v early in the morning, which may be intrusive if you have a room on that side, which we didn’t.
We would have found the generally dowdy feeling became oppressive for a longer stay, but as a one night stop off it seems to fit the concept of this ‘trapped in time’ town.

Room Tip: 'suites' have a separate sitting room with tv but still have an old feel.

We stayed here on the last leg of our tour.
It's a lovely old colonial hotel with nice grounds, and two lovely working log fires
Decor is old world and we loved our room complete with Mezzanine.
The hotel is placed close to the little town, which is a must do.
There is a local market where you can put your bartering skills to the test.
Food was average.
Unfortunately whilst we were there it was very cold, (as you are up near the tea plantations) and i struggled to eat my evening meal (which went cold very quickly) due to the dining room being freezing. There were lots of people dining with coats on.
There are heaters in the bedrooms but they are a tad inadequate.
Staff were friendly, and we had no issues with the cleanliness of the hotel.

This is an old colonial mansion which feels very old-fashioned inside, particularly in the bedroom. This may appeal to some: others may feel it needs modernising.

Lunch on the terrace from the a la carte menu was good, but the buffet dinner was poor. There was a wide choice, but the serving containers struggled to keep food warm and some dishes, eg the lasagne, were cold.

Wi-Fi was free and worked well in the room.

Very handy for walking into town. The room was very large and well appointed and a bit old-fashioned in a nice kind of way. We ate lunch on the terrace and had the best potato wedges ever! (starving after walking 9 km round Horton Plains). The gardens are lovely, the bar and sitting room had log fires and it was like a little piece of England in the hills. We played snooker (badly) on the full-sized table in a wood panelled room. We ate dinner in the restaurant, a la carte, the food was lovely, and looked much nicer than than the buffet, which everybody else was eating. It wasn't expensive and the people on the next table looked enviously at our food. There are Middle Eastern dishes on the menu and I had the hamour fish with hummus. Delicious.

Very large & big well maintained grounds , Lawns and Topiary Plants . Fairly long covered climbing passageway with beautiful flower arrangements takes you to the reception area.
Staff is courteous and attentive to your needs .
Rooms are fair sized but bath rooms was a bit cramped . The wing with Room number 109 had no air conditioning , but room heaters were provided.
Rather than have a double bed , two single beds were joined together . That also may be acceptable but there was a gap of more than about 6 inches between the two beds and thickness of the mattresses makes the matters worse. This arrangement is rather uncomfortable
Sri Lankan and Continental cuisine was on offer . Good spread and tasty .
Other than the twin bed discomfort it is a good place to stay .

A colonial building converted into a hotel, this property is located near the Nuwara Eliya Golf Course. A smooth check-in process with the Manager Janaka being specially friendly and helping us with tips for things to do. The food and room service are efficient. Our room opened into the front lawn. The building is old and well maintained, but at times creaky because of all the wood used. Otherwise a very good place to stay.

We very much enjoyed out stay at Jetwing St Andrew's: the staff were friendly, attentive, efficient; the building is full of character and has a fascinating history; our room was spacious and clean and comfortable [if you like a hard mattress!] with a lovely outlook onto the garden and french doors opening onto a little patio. A few things let the hotel down however and it wouldn't take much to improve on these and take it up to the level that the price suggests it should be at. The finish of some of the decoration in our room was very poor: extremely messy plasterwork around new plug sockets in the bathroom - really like a child had been at play - really scrappy paintwork on the skirting boards, a couple of the sockets in the room did not work, the wardrobe which had been repainted was really rough inside i.e. shelves snagged some clothes, the beautiful wooden floor did not meet the edge of the fireplace wall - there was a gap of about a 1cm. Such a pity that the attention to detail in some of the decoration was so poor - because the place could be really stunning. The new dining room extension is lacking in atmosphere in the evenings but its perfect for breakfast and the buffet dinner was disappointing - the restaurant was recommended in the guide book we were using but the buffet seemed to be all that was on offer and it was a bit 'tired'. I'm glad we stayed, and of course other rooms might be better finished, but overall we were expecting a bit more given the price and reputation.
