“Lovely hotel, not during New Years though!”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

This was a lovely hotel, a bit of colonial life that was very interesting. The grounds and garden were lovely, along with the common areas. Our room was largish and enjoyable, the only problem was the noise! Not only were there nightly concerts right on the lawn, the music/announcements from the carnival went non-stop all day and very late into the night. With the old single pane windows, the noise came right in....all the time.... The buffet was okay, we had much better in Kandy etc. The staff were very attentive, however it is a busy hotel with lots of tours, so it meant a lot of movement. One interesting note was that we were told to dress 'smart casual' for dinner, no shorts, no slippers, etc. But upon entering what is everyone and their child wearing, slippers, t-shirts, etc.. One highlight was the piano player, he was great, we quite enjoyed his music and felt bad everyone seemed to just walk by. Overall, we quite enjoyed the hotel, if only it could be a bit quieter.

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your review and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us, specially the Grounds and Garden. What you see today in is the hard work and dedication of our Champion Garden team led by Mr. S. Nathan. We are committed to improve and enhance both our property and services, results of which I am sure you will experience when you visit us next. We have already addressed your point regarding the dress code for Dinner and have taken corrective action, while we hope to inform the concerned parties about the long hours of music and announcements during this period. So thank you so much for your constructive review, and we look forward to serving you when you next visit Nuwara Eliya. Best wishes from all at the Grand Hotel. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

The hotel is 120 years old so if you want modern & naff don't stay here!
We LOVED the charm & character. The hotel is very well maintained especially considering the age of the property.
The gardens are magnificent-no wonder they win prizes. We got up early especially to enjoy them again before we left.
The food choice was excellent & the dining room is grand & traditional. My only complaint was other guests wearing inappropriate dinner attire despite instructions both at check in & outside the door. Frankly having made an effort myself they should have been turned away.
Also tables full of screeching kids at 9pm in a restaurant- they were Arab children lacking parental control.
There was a festival playing loud music until late but the staff were v attentive & even found us another quieter room.
Service was fine elsewhere.

This hotel has the most amazing dinner buffet! In general it is overpriced but the gardens are beautiful, the staff excellent and the common areas very nice. The rooms are fairly average but clean. It is a huge hotel so if there aren't many guests it could seem cold but when we were there is was very busy and we enjoyed it very much.

This was our second hotel on our tour of Sri Lanka. We were pleasantly surprised as some reviewers had been very negative. The grounds of the hotel certainly warrant the title grand. The building itself is very reminiscent of the past. The public rooms are very nicely furnished. Our room, was not large, but comfortable, and had the welcome addition of tea/coffee making equipment. We only stayed for two nights, but were more than happy with everything. The restaurant was quite formal, with one guest being turned away for wearing shorts, his outburst on being told this was actually rather amusing for us, deeply embarrassing for his wife, despite this being pointed out on checking in. The food was good with a reasonable choice of dishes both at breakfast and dinner.
One of the reasons for staying at Nuwara Eliya was so that we could visit Horton Plains. Unfortunately half way through our walk the heavens opened and we did the last 4kms in a torrential downpour. Needless to say we arrived back at the hotel in a very bedraggled state with very wet clothes. We asked if we could have them dried and were told that due to the fact we were leaving straight after breakfast the following day, it would not be possible to have them laundered and dried. We asked if they could just dry them, and about two hours later, they were returned to us laundered and pressed. Very impressive.

We would stay at this hotel again, whether I would walk Horton Plains again, I am not sure.

We stayed one night at this old hotel during the Sri Lankan New Year holiday. As a result, the hotel was quite full so maybe we didn't receive the standard of service that other reviewers experienced. We waited half an hour for our luggage to be brought up but in the end I finally went down to collect it myself. Our luggage was in amongst lots of other luggage in a room with a large TV screen which was being watched by numerous porters (who did jump up to help me but by then I was too angry and lugged everything up 2 flights of stairs myself). When we entered our room, we were annoyed to find at least 6-8 flies buzzing around. I asked reception for a can of fly spray but we're still waiting.....

The hot water was intermittent in the shower - first it was boiling hot, then it would be freezing cold so we had to jump in, soap up and try to rinse when it wasn't unbearable. The hot water in the wash basin was non-existent. At first I thought that it was due to the large number of people staying but even after leaving it running for 10 mins, it was still cold. The metal soap dish in the bath fell off as soon as we put soap in it.

Food at the buffet restaurant was average and I was a bit disappointed that Sri Lankan staples such as hoppers were not on offer. They cater very much for the large number of Muslims who stay here, so bacon is definitely off the menu. I am not racist but I do find it confronting to be eating by candlelight in a room where half the women are wearing burqas. The room itself is huge but we found this made us feel as if we were in a production line - feed them quick and get them out type of mentality.

The hotel, although maybe once stately, is in a shabby and run-down state. The room we were in was on the third floor, only accessible via stairs. The carpet is looking worn out and the bed felt as if it had a herd of elephants sleeping in it before us, such was the dip. We were also woken by the Muezzin calling the faithful to prayer at 4:45am.

All the light switches were grubby/sticky and we felt as if the whole place needed a good spring clean. The total lack of response from staff in regards our problems made us so very glad to leave. The most disappointing aspect of this stay was that I had worked it into our tour to coincide with my birthday. I thought it would be an impressive place to relive some of the majesty of the colonial days after our adventures in Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa & have a romantic dinner - I couldn't have been more wrong. I wouldn't stay here again if you paid me.

The hotel is too old but well maintained. I felt it as if i was in the 19th century some British colonial AMBIENCE. The furnitures were good and old. The corridors had very nice pictures of old Sri Lankan culture and their kings. The food was varied and of nice quality. At the front desk there were some homemade coffee chocolates which needs special mention. Over all it was good experience. I stayed there for 1 night. The Main market area was nearby at a walking distance. The green lushes were too good and the garden was nice with beautiful flowers. At the entrance of the hotel it has flags of different countries which they open and fold it in the evening before dark. The welcome drink was vanilla tea...hufff it was jus too good. Indeed good hotel and well maintained.

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your review and we are happy to note that you had enjoyed your stay and at our resort and had experienced the British Colonial ambience, which we try so hard to bring out. Chef Arosha and his team are always looking at ways to treat our guests with a variety of culinary delights created by them. The Grand Hotel and Nuwara Eliya has much more to offer, which would no doubt require a stay of at least 3 nights. So we invite you spend more time with us when you visit us next. thank you and best wishes from all of us. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

This place took our breath away as we came up the drive. The gardens were absolutely amazing and everything was in bloom.

The rooms were lovely and clean, although they didn't have AC or a fan, which we didn't need in the end anyway so I assume the weather is always lovely in Nuwara Eliya! We had lovely food in the cafe and the staff were very friendly. Very enjoyable stay and we'd stay here again.

Dear Guest, Thank you for reviewing us and we are happy to learn that your stay with us was most enjoyable.
