A totally delightful experience to stay here. This hotel shows just how well a heritage hotel can be maintained and repackaged for today's touring public. The state rooms are all grand and beautifully maintained. The grounds are very well stocked and the lawns are manicured. The individual hotel guest rooms are spacious and airy, and whilst they readily bring to our imagination the days long gone by, they are fully functional and very well maintained.

The buffet breakfast and evening dinner is excellent with plenty of choice. I was delighted by the musical 'combo' that played during the evening meal, it all echoed of the glory days gone by in the nicest possible way.

All staff members were cheery and welcoming, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. Very well done, and many thanks from me to them!

Elsewhere I have said that the HR and staff of the Galle Face hotel in Colombo would do very well to visit the Grand Hotel to learn just how a heritage hotel should be maintained, staffed and run. Doubtless they will not bother - at their peril!

What a disappointment this stay was! Six couples, we cannot all have got it wrong!
Splendid lobby and down stairs grandeur were our first impressions. We arrived 15.30 (3.30 pm) and our rooms were not ready for an other 45 minutes. We were served a wonderful cup of tea, very refreshing while waiting.
When finally getting our rooms -- what a sad discovery! Curtains dirty witth non descript stains and some lipstick (!) stains. Bathtub chipped and shabby. Toilet very hard to flush, possible luck on third or fourth attempt. Sound of running water for 15 minutes coming from the loo kept you wondering if it was ever going to stop after each successful flush.
Flickering LED light in bathroom. Dirty, smeared grout around walls in the bathroom. Dirty mat in front of wash hand basin in the bathroom - probably an ovversight as the cleaner were late in cleaning the rooms in anticipation of our arrival.
The room was small and shabby with a smeared mirror. The valance round the bed was stained. The double bed had clean thin sheeets with a blanket which got entangled in the loose sheet as the night progressed. You noticed the pattern of the mattress under the bottom sheet as there was no matress protector.
We complained three times that evening at the front desk about the flickering light and the rushing water sound coming from the toilet, resulting eventually in a young man knocking on our door and removing the electric kettle!!! This young mans knowledge of English was non existent when we tried to explain that our electricc kettle was perfectly all right but the rushing sound of water from the toilet was the problem.
We did have a wonderful meal in the restaurant downstairs (not the main dining room) but had to wait for one hour and 15 minutes before we were served. The rib eye steaks and sirloin steaks were finished in spite of us six friends being the first in the resturant that evening.
All staff were very friendly, but had problems understanding English.
Having travelled around Srii Lanka and having stayed in the best hotels made us realise the standard in some expensive hotels is reallly apalling. This hotel is one of those very sad and tired hotels with a clenleness which leaves A LOT to which for!
Needless to say , all six of us decided to leave the hotel in spite of having booked and payed for a longer stay. Kind Regards Dr K. Bonde

Room Tip: Do not chose this hotel at all if you want an upmarket, non shabby hotel

Its a beautiful hotel having a victorian look. The rooms are all cozy and comfirtable. Staff is extremely courteous and helpful. If am not wrong there were 4 restaurants in the hotel including a bar. The only problem was that there was no wifi in the rooms and the buffet dinner was a tad too expensive. Otherwise it was a very comfortable stay

it's a pleasant stay in Grand hotel of Nuwara eliya. her England style architecture and old-fashioned decorations reminds me of elegant and beautiful old times. the room is clean and neat, the heater is great and the outside surroundings such as huge pines and cedars and cool breezes made us relaxed and satisfied. but the room rates are too expensive.

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your review. We are happy to learn that you appreciate the architecture and design of the Grand Hotel. Nuwara Eliya it self, is called "Little England" because lots of the buildings, Gardens and even varieties of flowers have been brought down from Britain, to create a home away from home to the English planters 150 years ago. We at the Grand will maintain this ambience, while improving the services and facilities of the resort. So thank you, and hope to see you again. Best wishes from all at the Grand Hotel. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel for one night in January 2013 and were amazed by it's excellent cuisine. Even though it's a buffet (which I normally don't like), the food is absolutely delicious. The buffet is served at the "orangerie" and offers a big variety of food, also freshly prepared one. Thanks to be buffet being next to the dining room, it means that in the main dining hall there are no cooking smells at all.
The rooms are nice, but there is no WiFi (only in the lobby).
The location is great, as it takes less than 10 minutes by foot to be downtown.

The Grand in Nuwara Eliya is an old style colonial style hotel which has been modernised over time but still keeps it's original charm. The hotel gardens are immaculately kept with stunning gardens. The rooms in the hotel are relatively small but are clean and quite functional.

The restaurant facilities are great, particularly the great buffet dinners which are served in a beautiful eating area. The live music during dinner is a nice touch and tastefully done so that you can enjoy it without it affecting your conversation with others. The hotel also has a great "olden style" bar a billboards room with three full size tables (which means it takes an eternity to play a game if you are not that good!)

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your review of our resort. The Property which has been providing accommodation for more than 150 years, has undergone expansions and improvements throughout that period, to meet the requirements of its guests. Even to this day, we believe in adding on to the facilities and improving our service, whilst maintaining the "original charm" mentioned by you. Yes, our garden is enjoyed and appreciated by many, however, it will be at its best after April when the flowers are in full bloom. So thank you once again, and hope to see you soon. Best wishes from all of us at the Grand Hotel. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

Unfortunately during our tour around Sri Lanka of 8 hotels this was the worst we stayed in Sri Lanka. It is an average hotel with poor service. For example our bags were not delivered to our room and I and to go and get them. Staff were rude at times. Had to ask for coffee three times at breakfast before it was served at breakfast. These things added up during our stay and you would expect a hotel of this price range to get some basic service right. Poor unfortunately.
