“Generally great, with beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed January 23, 2013 via mobile

The Grand in Nuwara Eliya is an old style colonial style hotel which has been modernised over time but still keeps it's original charm. The hotel gardens are immaculately kept with stunning gardens. The rooms in the hotel are relatively small but are clean and quite functional.

The restaurant facilities are great, particularly the great buffet dinners which are served in a beautiful eating area. The live music during dinner is a nice touch and tastefully done so that you can enjoy it without it affecting your conversation with others. The hotel also has a great "olden style" bar a billboards room with three full size tables (which means it takes an eternity to play a game if you are not that good!)

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your review of our resort. The Property which has been providing accommodation for more than 150 years, has undergone expansions and improvements throughout that period, to meet the requirements of its guests. Even to this day, we believe in adding on to the facilities and improving our service, whilst maintaining the "original charm" mentioned by you. Yes, our garden is enjoyed and appreciated by many, however, it will be at its best after April when the flowers are in full bloom. So thank you once again, and hope to see you soon. Best wishes from all of us at the Grand Hotel. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

Unfortunately during our tour around Sri Lanka of 8 hotels this was the worst we stayed in Sri Lanka. It is an average hotel with poor service. For example our bags were not delivered to our room and I and to go and get them. Staff were rude at times. Had to ask for coffee three times at breakfast before it was served at breakfast. These things added up during our stay and you would expect a hotel of this price range to get some basic service right. Poor unfortunately.

Old but grand, with the feel of the colonial past from the chandelier and piano to the pub atmosphere of a bar connected to a billiards room and the bay window in the rooms. Plenty of eating outlets - an outside high tea area, inside cafe, restaurant, fine dining in the basement. Another dining option is by the driveway to the hotel and which sells cakes but serves lunch and dinner as well ( at lower prices ) - not sure whether it's part of the hotel but seems to be.If you're still not convinced you've wandered back in time there was a band playing music during dinner and the lead singer belted out songs from the 60s and 70s. Don't mind staying here again. Tea wot old chap?

Dear Guest, Many thanks for your descriptive review of The Grand. The ambiance of a bygone era with modern conveniences is something we try to create at our resort, and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed what we have on offer. However, we hope to make additions both to our facilities and services, which I am sure you will enjoy when you visit us next. Thanks again, and best wishes from all of us at the Grand Hotel. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

I stayed there this Jan'13. The check in was fast and the Duty Manager himself escorted us to our rooms which is a nice gesture. Though, we werent given the Warm Towel on arriving but I wont complain for that. The service of the hotel was good and the staff was very hospitable. The ingenious lay-out of the hotel provides mountain view for most of its rooms. The room was moderately equipped with a CRT TV , almirah, dresser, chairs and a Tea console. There was no mini-bar but a mini-fridge was provided on request. Pls bear in mind this being a heritage building they are not allowed to make much alterations from the original lay-out. Hence, adjusting the room for a permanent mini-bar or study desk etc is not possible.
The breakfast buffet was great with huge choices for a Vegetarian like me. Though, in-room dining had limited offerings. The Indian restaurant in the hotel compound doesnt make room service, which is a negetive. Bar is also too small in space. Evening live Piano recital in the lobby is soothing.
One thing they need to do is to get the hall-way carpets cleaned. those are very dirty and stained.
Overall I liked my stay.

Room was clean and tidy but small and shower was too small (I'm not a big guy and I still couldn't fit comfortably). Tv was an old CRT with bad reception and only 3 or so English channels which didn't always work.

Service was good however for what we paid the rooms should be much better. We paid around the same at Amaya lake in dambulla and jetwing beach in negombo and those rooms were much nicer and more comfortable and I could fit in the shower

A very stylish hotel with a great garden and near the city. You can go by wlalking downtown and to the golf. The rooms are bit outfashioned but the lobby and common areas are very nice to spend some time. Staff very friendly. No swimming pool but it is pretty cool out there.

Room Tip: Try to hqve a room to face the garden.

Dear Guest, Our sincere thanks for your review. We are happy to know that you have enjoyed both the facilities inside the hotel and in the little town of Nuwara Eliya. Our Garden Manager Mr. Nathan,is replanting and preparing the flower gardens around the hotel, which will be in full bloom from April onwards. In the meantime, we hope to add more "things to do" inside the resort and outside, which I am sure you will notice when you visit us next. Thank you for your comments on our service, which we will continue to improve. Best wishes from all of us at the Grand. Sincerely, Resident Manager.
